Namco released a collection that includes 2 official demakes for the NES: Pac-man CE and Gaplus.
The roms have been extracted and shared out on the internet. I can't tell you where to find it, but you can do google search and should be able to locate them. Both are playable on original hardware if you have a flashcart.
I can say Pac-man CE runs and plays really great on an original NES. I'm going to try out Gaplus later tonight, but I've seen some streams of it today and it looks like it's a great version of Galaga 3.

Was wondering if they would work on original hardware. Great news. Awesome project.

I remember seeing a video years ago about a pacman ce demake. I wonder if this is one of those deals where namco found a modder and used their game.

I had the same thought, Howard.

The pac man game was in development by m2 for a few years. The developer was not sure if it would ever come out. It is probably the same game you saw.

Yup, it was in development for the 3DS for a couple of years and was never released.

Both games are impressive. Seeing demakes like these on old hardware with all the technological limitations are good reminders of how much game design principles have progressed over the years.

Ok can any mame layout gurus chime in on this idea..... Let's say we make a layout in mess the crops the screen and then takes just the score area and crops it to where it traditionally puts the score in old school pacman.... could that be done to make the game vertical friendly? I've seen the layout use just a bit of a screen in punch-out but I don't know how that was accomplished.

This is really neat - definitely going to check this out.

Thanks for the heads up on this, these look awesome (especially the Pac Man CE version)!

Just tried it. It's really fun... good enough to get me thinking about including some NES stuff in the cab I'm working on.

I have been at it on and off since I saw this thread, and yesterday hit 426K on the first game of the day
