Title: Arcade1up golden tee trackball is it happ?
Post by: Lizzardking on April 15, 2020, 12:07:53 pm
Trying to get the OEM arcade1up trackball working over USB and I haven't had any success yet.  Was wondering if anyone can verify it is a happ part/pinout and wiring seem to be different but I don't have a happ trackball to compare.
Here are a few pics of the trackball - https://imgur.com/a/PC606EL
This is the game room solutions encoder that I tried to wire but wouldn't work - https://imgur.com/a/oBHH3u8

Is that a 3” trackball? You might be able to get the encoder boards and hook up the trackball that way. Here’s what you need from Happ (you’ll need two of them):

It is a 3 inch trackball.  The game room solution arcade1up trackball is 2.5. Bought that and their encoder board but that won't work unfortunately.
Would purchasing the entire kit be the best solution?

No.  Many people have reported that the Happ USB/PS2 trackball encoder suffers from backspin.   :soapbox:

Better to order two of the A052-1011-00 "red boards" mentioned above, the "no-solder (https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=76_85&products_id=261)" cable from GGG and an OptiWiz 3 (https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=76_85&products_id=260) from GGG.
- Don't order the red boards from Happ, they charge way too much for shipping.
- Many other vendors like Twisted Quarter (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=113_121&products_id=24) carry them.

Thanks for saving me from another bunk purchase.  I have the wires and encoder in my shopping cart and am looking around for the red boards now and have a stupid question - on the arcade1up trackball one board is wider then the other, will I need to order 2 different red board part numbers?

It's really hard to tell if this is actually a happ trackball. On Reddit people seem to think it is but the shape is slightly different, encoder boards seem different, and the lip around the trackball is a half inch tall to match the controller thickness.  I'm starting to think replacing the trackball and learning how to router might be my only option.

I think I have an extra Happ trackball laying around if you want to buy it. PM if you’re interested.

Sorry to jump in here, but I've been searching the web for a solution to my trackball problem, and perhaps this is it...

My trackball has green boards, and there are instances were it seems to freeze? Or something odd, if I spin it too hard. Could this be the issue? Come to think of it... I do think mine is a USB... I was figuring it had to do with being over voltage or something, but perhaps swapping in these red boards + parts would solve this issue?

Thank you,

- A new guy around here.

If you're seeing backspin when you move the trackball quickly:
  1. Verify that the encoder wheel is mounted securely on the roller so both are always moving together.
  2. Check if the rollers are moving smoothly, not binding or causing the ball to skip.
  3. Make sure you have the frame ground (2 green wires ==> ring terminal) connected to ground so the static charge generated by moving the trackball is safely drained to ground.

If those three things are OK and you're still experiencing backspin, then changing out the optical boards and optical encoder is the next logical step.

There's a post explaining some of the technical aspects of backspin here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,161995.msg1707739.html#msg1707739).

that's not a happ trackball.  i think because they used happ in their demo units at CES, people think they're happ.

happ red boards are 1 3/16" x 1 7/8" for size reference.  but not sure if the optical sensor mounting will work out for that trackball or not.
