I'm setting up a Mame (only) cabinet and was able to acquire a Makvision 27" Tri-Mode CRT. Does anyone here have any experience with setting one of these up to their computer? I've been reading the forums and it seems like there are multiple ways do to this, but was hoping to get some insight from someone who is using this type of monitor. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That guide does not specifically cover tri-sync CRT's, but it's a good jumping off point. Your tri-sync CRT's lower range will be 15kHz, which covers the bulk of MAME games up to the late 90's.
If you're on Linux there are other options.

Right, I am aware that the max res. is 640x480. For Mame only, that shouldn't be an issue though should it..

Should not be an issue for MAME, as long as everything is set up right so the computer never tries to go over that.
Grant, is that a hard limit on the dot clock or something? Or are are you talking hard 31kHz, and as long as you stay under that you can play with lines/FPS as usual?

no idea, i just fix them- all i know is if you give this chassis anything over 800x600 (it won't run 800 x 600 but i think it survives)it will run the HOT to hard and short

Just to clear things up... You're saying 800x600@60fps won't work. But would 800x600@50fps? The latter would be just over 32kHz, i think.

never tried, i fix for arcades mainly so the chassis go back to original machine

familiarize yourself with GroovyMAME, get a compatible ATI video card and a dedicated PC to run it.
You will also need a video amplifier to up the voltage to Arcade levels, Ultimarc has what you need.
I just went through the whole process with my own Makvision 27" Tri-Mode CRT a few months back, bought a second even for vertical titles.
You need to setup CRT EMUdriver with a compatible ATI card and install Atom15 BIOS drivers on the card to lock it at a safe res and refresh. Even just the boot screen of your typical PC can fry that monitor without this stopgap in place. Take your time!

Thank you for this. I did order a Radeon HD 6450 which seems to be a popular card and recommended well on Groovymame. I never would have thought about a video amplifier being needed, so I greatly appreciate that information and will be sure to pick one of those up.
Are you using your Mak for just MAME (only) or have you been able to add anything else? The capped resolution seems to be limiting...

DeMUL works fantastic with the 640x480 restriction.
That covers Naomi, Naomi 2 , Atomiswave, Dreamcast, and a whole host of Cave titles infinitely better than Mame can as it utilizes hardware acceleration.
