Title: questions about decasing monitor

the 21" monitor I picked up used for my cocktail problem will not fit as is.  (Cornerstone Color 21)
I need to take the case off of it but wanted to find out how dangerous it is before I proceed.
I know that monitors must be discharged before you screw around with them.  Does that include just decasing them?  Can I touch the metal shielding without killing myself?  As long as I don't start sticking screwdrivers inside will I be okay?
HELP!
This thing looks GREAT btw...If it'll just fit...

Actually, I have a 19" cornerstone and was kinda wondering the same thing.  I had planned to just leave the case on it, but if it's easy enough to take off (and safe for myself and the monitor) then I'd be will to try that

Now I'm by no means endorsing unsafe practises--but i just decased 2 ,14" monitors--switched their cases (one fit, the other didn't) and recased them--without discharging--when the monitor is unplugged there are no electrical hot spots on the board--the only thing with stored residual charge is the tube itself--if you handle it carefully, then you can do it without discharging it--If this makes you nervous, then discharge it--you still have a choice, make the one that feels most comfortable with your level of monitor experience.

The hot spot on monitors is actually the flyback & wire attached to it...
Basically find the 1" to 3" suction cup that's attached to the side of the tube. There is a wire coming out of that suction cup.  DO NOT REMOVE THE SUCTION CUP!!!  The charge is actually help in the flyback (where the other end of that wire that is connected to the controller board)...

Google for information on discharging monitors... This will usually give you more details about where to avoid, even if you decide to handle it without discharging it.

I've handled half a dozen decased monitors, but I've also been educated as to what areas to avoid contact with...  Just find out where your hotspots are be very carefull if you decide not to discharge it (ALTHOUGH I & EVERYONE ELSE HERE RECOMMENDS YOU DISCHARGE ANY MONITOR YOU'RE GOING TO DECASE & HANDLE!!!)

Probably dangerous & stupid, but I decased mine, and mounted it in the cab by just holding it by the frame around the front of the screen area, and not touching it anywhere else. Like Menace said though, I'm not endorsing this behavior.

I'm assuming you guys are using PC monitors and under the plastic case there is usually a metal frame surrounding it.  If so you really dont have to worry about.  But if you are going to try and mount it to the side of a cocktail cab it might be best to discharge it first just to be on the safe side.  Just google it and you can find a few different ways to do it.
