ROM Name: Mikie

GAME PLAY:
4-way + 1 Button
Looks like influenced by Ferris Bueller (couldn't be. FB was made in 1986) + Skool Daze on ZX Spectrum (Doubtful, released the same year)
Knock peers off their school desks, pick hearts and Exit rooms to progress. Pick hearts at the right time for extra point bonus.
I had several games on my mind and wanted to do shooter, but there were too many lately so something else I remember from childhood. As always don't guarantee popularity in USA
PS. This forum doesn't allow for pix insert wherever?
Last day: Sunday, November 03, 2019, midnight Pacific Time.

A whole new kind of confusion for me. Not "There's waaaaay too much going on in Boogie Wings" confusing, but more like "How can I play a game 3 times in a row and get zero points every time? What do I do?"
4200 after some luck or something? I got some hearts from some 2 or 3 desks?

-
You're right, it is a little bit confusing. You do it not with the push button but with joystick. You nudge them off with your butt (joystick left/right) on either side of the desk. Headbutt is with the button.
-
A little bit confusing? Without watching two vids I would never have guessed a) what to do, b) how to do it and c) why the heck does button 1 not do anything?
Seriously, why did they make a button that you only use to exit the level the primary button?
Things I have learned from watching the vids and fiddling around a bit:
- in level 1 you have to knock all your classmates from their chairs by repeatedly bumping into them using joy left/right
- you have to sit down on every chair (press down to sit down, up to stand up), after that the exit door is 'open'
- sitting on a chair protects you from the teacher (let him wander around for a while, then quickly dash to the next classmate and knock him/her from the chair)
- you can headbutt the teacher using button 2, but you have to be on the exact horizontal/vertical line (good luck with that, if you miss, you are dead)
- open the exit door with button 1
- I don't like this game
-
Oh well tried something different. I assume somehow this game didn't quite make it to your shores?
Y'all will have to survive until next pick.
-
Thanks for trying something different. I appreciate the thought, if not the selection. :]
I'm still probably the primary offender for selecting the unloved.
For better or for worse, I think that I saw preeeetty much every game that was in America (not bragging, not confessing, just reporting semi-objectively), & I have a good memory for this stuff, & I have no recollection of Mikie...
But, learning that button 1 is *not* the way to bump kids out of the seats is key--might give it another go w/ this newfound info.
Thanks,
-Jason

I got a great laugh seeing this topic.
Yeah, this game sucks. Why push people off their chairs when you can invite them outside?
However, all kinds of goodies.

A few more observations.
- make sure to sit on the chair soon after having bumped your classmate off, if not, you will have to do it again
- if you can't free the chair in one go, circle around it, bump your target once, repeat until you can sit down
- if you need some breathing space, go to the top of the screen, wait for the teacher, headbutt him
- in level 2, you can safely headbutt people going up or down
- headbutting several people at once = nice bonus
- headbutting is dangerous

- in level 1 you have to knock all your classmates from their chairs by repeatedly bumping into them using joy left/right
You don't "have to" knock ALL your classmates, just those with hearts. IF you time it correctly and sit down when the other part of heart lines up, you get 1000 points vs 200 I think.
- you have to sit down on every chair
Not really. just to collect hearts.
- sitting on a chair protects you from the teacher
Not too long or either kids or the teacher starts throwing books or something (don't remember exactly)
Other than that thanks for the tips couldn't have (didn't) done it better!

You trying to find logic in game after going on some crazy numerology binge?

It's an old mayan prophecy. 'When two hearts are one, you shall get a 1000 bonus points.'
Just bumping the kids who have a heart speeds things up a bit.

I use it to let him walk away a bit, wait for him to come back and headbutt him. Then I stroll over to the next kid.
Some tips:
- For some reason, you get 800 points for headbutting up/down, which, ironically, is also much easier.
- Knock a kid off the chair, wait for the hearts to align, collect the heart+bonus. If you manage to collect all heart bonuses, you get a 'perfect' bonus (5000 points, I think).
61,000. If you know what to do, this game is not so bad. I still don't like it, but I can stand playing it.

To note, I like the graphics. I may re-visit this.

Oh, and.....
-
Maybe I'm biased, but this game ain't half as bad as y'all making it out to be.
-
It took me about 5 games before I got any points at all. Why doesn't headbutt knock them off their chairs? I also was about to beat the first level and the teacher threw the damn book at me. WTF.
-
Oh, c'mon Yama posted whole explanation way before you posted your first score.
-
Maybe I'm biased, but this game ain't half as bad as y'all making it out to be.
It's not a total stinker, but it IS poorly designed. It's not intuitive at all, everyone who plays it for the first time doesn't get it without help, the button you use most is button two, button one could have been omitted (why do you have to press a button to open the door?), headbutting has to be pixel perfect. I can't count the times I have died because I thought I was in the right position but apparently wasn't. If I had to pay for every game I would have torched the cab.
87,800. The game loops after 5 stages, I think the baddies get faster in the following levels, which makes timing and getting the right position for headbutting even more fun. Oh joy.

I haven't turned on my machine to try this again.... Perhaps today.
Apparently yam has the final word on this game, though. (And said what I would have said.)
And speaking of hearts. This was next in play in the right pane of Twilight Zone. I saved it for goodness' sake.
-
I accidentally found out that button 1 has another function. Stage 2 (locker room) has three flashing boxes, those are storage bins for basket balls. Use button 1 to grab a ball, push button 1 to throw the ball. If one of the baddies catches it, he will happily begin playing with it (plus you get 400 points).

I'll give you that. I had the advantage of seeing the game played in arcades and even I was getting pissy how to play it, because I forgot you have to use joystick and not the button. Took me couple of games to figure it out again!

You must be some sort of gaming wizard/prodigy. I've never seen ANYONE progress past level 2 in this game in arcades not to mention notice that little detail!
PS. If you guys knew this game from arcades, you'd probably have much bigger attachment to it.
-

Yep, I totally am. 8)
Nah, practice makes perfect. I have played this a lot because I wanted to get through the first loop. Once you have a plan for each stage and get the timing for the headbutting right (at least most of the time), doing the first loop is actually not hard.
For reference: The MARP record is 580k+, the guy in 3rd place got to loop 4, stage 4. So loop 2 stage 2 is not impressive.

Finding out about the basket balls literally was an accident. I pushed the wrong button at the wrong place. It's a nifty feature, I now always carry a ball in case some baddy gets to close to me. Also, I like the animation :)

^^^^ Looks like someone warmed up to the game ;)

How did he pull off all those close-calls?
Note: Used invincibility cheat after down to last life.
Here's a longplay that doesn't appear to use cheat codes.

Pitiful turnout. I don't expect more submissions, perhaps PBJ's pick will have more luck (unless something changes at the last moment).
Yamatetsu w/quite impressive - 107,100
mimic - 20,600
pbj - 11,600
jasonbar - 4200
-
Finally cleared the 1st level. I was thinking "maybe this game was meant to be played with a 4 way?" and then I read the first post. This is near impossible with an 8 way.
:banghead:
12,600
-
Soo, it's pbj's turn to choose the next game.

Yup, it's a wrap for this one, see you in pbj's pick!
Final tally:
Yamatetsu - 107,100
mimic - 20,600
pbj - 12,600
jasonbar - 4200

I'll fire up CoinOps tonight and find something to punish y'all with.

I'm thinking Joust. Any objections?
-
Not my cup of tea. But go ahead, it's a classic.
-
131,700. Loop 3, stage 1.
151,200. Loop 2, played more efficiently.

Competition over and you are STILL playing it! C'mon you tell them ALL, this game is NOT bad at all (once you get to know it and ignore poor controls scheme)!
As to the Joust, it's a classic that I personally never much cared about, did like to observe good players play it though.
-
Nope, it IS a bad game. If it wasn't for the challenge, I would never have played it. I have set myself the goal to get to loop 3, which I have done. Game over.

Damn, not swayed!
