I'm setting up my new PC. I have an Nvidia 1650 in it. Dirextx 12 is installed. I was having an issue with it crashing and restarting the system at MAME ROM launch. I'm pretty ignorant about drivers and such, but I suppose it sounds like some kind of video card driver issue.
Anyway, I went in MAME.ini and changed the video setting over to BGFX and that seems to have resolved the issue. Except now when I launch a vector game like Asteroids it will crash after 20 seconds or so. Any thoughts about a work around to prevent the crashing in vector games?

Damn, I just had it crash out on a "regular" game too. It's MAME .214.

Could be a hardware issue. A fatal crash that instigates an OS reboot is pretty hardcore. Have you checked to see if it crashes when playing a PC game (i.e. something unrelated to MAME)?
[edit] Ah, you have tried a regular game, I see. So yeah, issue not related to MAME, specifically.

No, I meant a non-vector MAME game. I haven't tried anything else yet, I just set it up.

Do you have HLSL enabled? Have DX9?

I was using HLSL before I upgraded the system and to MAME 214. I copied 214 overwriting the previous, so I suppose some of the HLSL settings stayed the same. But I switched to BGFX. Honestly, I am still not clear if or to what extent BGFX utilizes HLSL...
The system has DX12.

Look in the inis (or game properties if using a UI build) of those games. The command tree in MAME is convoluted. Global settings blow past games all the time.

I'm going to try a fresh MAME install and see if that helps.
