Ok ok, I know about www.videoconnect.com and ebay....
But what I really want to know is if anyone knows a place where I can get just the yellow knobs for the rotary joysticks (ikari warrior style) and also just the wiring harnesses for these joysticks as well.

I never did find a source so I built my own--very easy if you have access to a belt sander or similar.--took 10 minutes then paint.

You might want to try dipping the wood knob in a yellow flexible plastic dip coating. I saw some in the JC Whitney catalog called Dip & Grip for $5. It is water-based acrylic material that dries to the consistency of plastic.

Has anyone tried to adapt a current joystick into a rotary style? I mean, how hard would it be to attach a 12 position rotary switch to the shaft of a joystick? Looking at a lot of pictures of rotary joysticks I do not see any signs of other circuitry other than a common rotary switch which can be picked up from radio shack.
By the way, I am new to the forums

if you guys can provide an actual handle, or provide accurate dimension data I can give you a quote on manufactung exact replica's of the original knob.
(precision machined ,not cheaply injection molded)

nice :D, and does cover some of the more basic dimensions.
but the bulk of what i need is not included there. :-\
Depths,radii, angles,etc,etc..
considering the demand for these sticks, and my love as well for games like ikari, nam,time,etc i think im gonna order one up and take my time in the inspection department here at work and put together the dimensions necessary for cloning this item.
i cant imagine machining these from scratch costing more than a few bucks.(no base or hardware, just an identical handle) and of course machining them from scratch affords us the selection of materials and colors.
some nice mirror finished 304/316 stainless ones sound good to me ;D
or maybe clear acrylic with a superbrite LED mounted inside :P
possibiites are limitless.

If it doesn't exist, someone comes along and builds it. Keep us posted on your progress. I was just going to purchase ls30 sticks this week, would your handles replace any specific brand/model? (I don't want to buy the wrong ones)

well i just got a handle on a LS-30 and im gonna order it up after lunch...
i got a big gaping hole in my control panel next to my P360 for karate champ/robotron style games.i had planned on getting a second P360, but this way i get to kill 3 birds with 1 stone..
figure ill get the stick sometime next week..
/ dimension it / create a solidmodel / create prints / get it quoted for production in runs of 10, 50 and 100/
id say 2 weeks total till we have something to work with. ;D
in the meantime ,i see some hardware pressed into that handle in the images on the other thread..
any chance someone can search out that brass threaded fitting and see if they can find a source?
any distinguishing manufacturers markings?

"This interface accepts an input from the 13 pin harness on the rotary joystick and provides output feeds for a keyboard encoder. To wire the joystick, you still hook up the normal up/down/left/right switches to a keyboard encoder as usual, then when you plug in the 13 pin joystick harness into the Rotary Interface, you wire the outputs of this interface to the keyboard encoder. The result is a link between the joystick and keyboard encoder for the normal direction switches, plus the extra 2 rotary directions via the Rotary Interface. "

thanks egomaniacal1 for reviving this thread.
so anyways, I just ended buying 2 brand new ones from videoconnect since I wasn't able to get the spare parts for controls that I was going to win off of ebay. A lot of the rotary joysticks sold on ebay having missing or cut cables, and the yellow knobs really look old/used/beat....
and yes, you would have to use druin's rotary interface to fully use these joysticks, but man is it worth buying all 3 components as now I can play ikari warriors as it was meant to be played (as welll as time soldiers and heavy barrel).. pricey, but well worth it!

are these sticks much deeper than Happ P360's?
i might have to scrap my Control panel if so..
so the ones from video connect are NOS? Sweet
i thought they were just used reconditioned ones.
man , i remeber pumping fistfulls of quarters into heavy barrel..
man it looks sooooo cheezy now when i play it , but that game was the absolute king when it was out..

I believe the LS-30 and Wico Rotary are about the same thing. Does anyone know the prices of these 2 joysticks? I saw videoconnect lists them for $37, but I can't tell if that is each or a pair and I can't find a price on the Wico's.
Also, you should not need Druins interface, although I hear it is great. If you have the connections, there is a thread somewhere that says you can use Analog Mame and just plug each of the 13 wires into your keyboard encoder. Probably a bit more wiring and configuring, but cheaper than Druin's interface. On the other hand, with Druin's interface I think you only need 2 or 3 extra connections to the encoder.

i think u r correct. but the prospect of using up 13 inputs on my opti-pac isnt really an avenue i like the sound of. if i had one of the fancy opti-pac 4's(?) with like 40 inputs then maybe..
either way i would have to buy either another ipac or the rotary interface. might as well get druins...

With druins rotary interface, you would need a total of 4-6 wires going to your keyboard encoder:
2 or 4 - clockwise and counter clockwise motions/keystrokes (depending on having 1 or 2 joysticks installed)
1 - ground
1 - +5 volt

WonderMellon. Video Connection only sells NOS SNK LS-30 rotarys. They do not have the similar Data East/Wico rotarys. Hell, the SNK LS-30'S haven't been made in a long time either but fortunatly Video Connection must have bought the remaining stock from SNK because they are brand new. I bought a pair a couple months ago.Over $90.00 for a pair after tax and shipping charges but at least they're not some old used Ebay junk with missing parts or wires. The only way to get the Wico rotarys is Ebay and good luck finding new ones. The Wico rotarys are actually just regular Wico leafswitch joysticks with the rotary hardware added on to it. Most of the Wico rotarys used the yellow cylindrical knobs similar to the SNK sticks except they were smooth instead of hexagon shaped. They also had Data East (DE) embossed on the top of the handle since all the Data East rotary games used Wico rotarys and all the SNK,Tradewest and Nichibutsu rotary games used the LS-30's. Wico did however release a few balltop handle rotary sticks too. The balltop versions were yellow too. Personally I think the LS-30 rotarys feel and operate much better then the Wicos but thats my opinion.

This is a kick ass little stick 8)
theres more to it than i had envisioned, especially the way they mate the knob to the shaft.
it uses a collet system :o, very cool..
theres a tapered insert placed in the mold itself when the knob is fabricated.seated in that there is a small brass collet thats tensioned with a M6x1.0 nut.
As this is tightened it grips the knurled end of the shaft locking it in place.
heres a quick and sloppy print of the brass collet to wet the pallette.

ill get the knob completed asap, and id also like to make a print for the removal tool itself for all those poor unfortunets who have lost or broken theirs.

here it is, an almost idential clone of the ls30 removal tool.
theres simply too much uneeded geometry to machine this. A simpler interpretation of this item would be required to machine it,and even then it wouldnt really be cost effective.
the original manufacturing method of Injection molding is the only real way to go. Ill create a mold of this model.
