DESCRIPTION
Bosconian
Player spaceship stays at screen center, firing both to front and rear, surviving enemy fighters to destroy all green hexagonal enemy space stations by shooting their core or all six corners.
Game Play
This game is similar to Time Pilot and Sinistar in that your ship stays in the center of the screen. During flight, you must avoid stationary asteroids and mines. As you progress in levels, the green hexagonal enemy space stations begin to shoot missiles from their cores. When under enemy bases, enemy fighters can change direction at will.
The game features synthesized voice messages: "Blast Off!" start of round, "Alert! Alert!" enemy ships approaching, "Battle stations!" enemy formation attack, "Spy ship sighted" green triangular bonus enemy, and "Condition Red!" time-per level exceeded, enemy frenzy.
Last day: Sunday, October 6, 2019, midnight Pacific Time.

86,080. Finally a game that the one armed bandit is able (and willing) to play.

This is more fun than I recall. Actually rather soothing. Not very hectic, not lots of close calls, no cursing, no cheap deaths. After playing a long game, I feel refreshed more than jittery or wiped out.

160,150. There are no cheap deaths, but I collect many many stupid ones. Like needlessly flying across the missile port and promply getting disintegrated.

69,580. Figuring out when it’s too much effort to try to maximize points by destroying all the base corners versus the quick shots at the core. So far my best scores are coming from not trying to get too clever.

That's a no brainer. If you cripple the base before destroying it, you get 2,700 points versus 1,500 for the quick shot. That adds up to a lot of lost points. That late into level 6 you could have had about 95-100k.
I usually go for strafing runs at a 45 degree angle from underneath or above the base. If it goes perfectly, you can destroy 4 corners in one run, most of the time I get 2-3 corners blasted.
Also, in case you, like me, played a lot of games without even testing it: This game has autofire. You can do a lot of mayhem just by firing constantly while maneuvering around.

After 3 games
Edit: It feels like I'm hitting the wall!
The best so far after more games
Thanks for the tip about the autofire, never knew that!!

Ahhh. I didn't care for this game in the day. I remember it being 4-way, or it had a 4-way stick (!), which irked the hell out of me. The graphics didn't impress me. However, I have found a new regard for it.
I did not know about the scoring. Shooting all nodes destroys the base. I thought the center also had to be shot (like with the mother ship in Xevious). So a new strategy. Next game may be a bit more. The native auto-fire eluded me until late this last game. Still, sniping things fore and aft is fun.

Well, I am third again, even after another run. Shooting nodes takes too long, frequently bringing on 'condition red', so ekeing it out works better for me.
-
You know that shooting the yellow spy ship prevents 'condition red', right?

Hmmm, I didn't realize that myself. Just started this evening.

I did not. I've mostly shot it....but I'll look out for that.
I had thought the title of this game came from Doc Smith's Lensman series, but hadn't looked for that till now, found only at https://www.arcade-history.com/?page=detail&id=320 (https://www.arcade-history.com/?page=detail&id=320) I would like to know the story behind this......
The origin of the keywords in Bosconian (as in the 'Zwilniks of Boskone') is the Lensman space-opera saga, which in Japan always enjoyed high popularity.
Bosconian : Boskonian
I-Type missile : Eich
P-Type missile : Ploor
E-Type misslle : Eddore
And a new score. Level 7 is easy. Shoot the left-most base from the bottom, then go East - and straight on till morning. I did do a bit of base-mining through the game, and went for the easiest kill when red came.

That's why I read the thread from the original compo, sometimes stuff like that can be found there.

Negative. Comp ends in 25.5 hours. This weekend. Not the halfway point.
Time to pick it up, people--got some good competition......though I'm a hypocrite--spent all day out today, so booked solid tomorrow w/ catching up on everything that I neglected today--I doubt I'll get any play in.
Thanks,

Wow. Didn’t realize it was already two weeks.

Jason, your turn.

Will do tonight.

Sure. Typically I don't look up tips and tricks and easter eggs - though shooting the spy ship works until it stops appearing, soon followed by Condition Red, which stops at the end of the screen.
Tried several times, but next best was 117k. Bosconian is a curious game. Elements of game play, and a certain complexity that was before its time, yet nothing striking as a 'game'. Fun enough, though.
