Title: Custom art for cocktail project pics
Post by: Pixelhugger on February 13, 2004, 09:37:34 pm
A departure from the marquee art I've been doing. This is for another BYOAC member's (beautiful) scratch built cocktail. The yellow version is intended to complement the wood sides of the cabinet. The grid version is influenced by Motofish's work by way of GSXRMovistar's work.  ;)

It would appear my art has entered a "blue" period.

This is ver. 1:

Pixel, how long did it take you to make?

Thanks - The turnaround time is due largely to being able to take advantage of down time at work...and getting some time in after my (patient) wife and baby have gone to sleep. A couple hours here, a couple there, over the course of the week. These designs took 3 days of periodic work. It's hard to say how many hours since I get sort of lost in the process.  I'd say it's probably at 6-8 so far on these.

I like number 1.

The orange makes it.

I like 3 and 4 best (3 a bit more) as modern "art", but #1 has the most retro feeling to it.

I wonder though, how well do these images come out when you have them printed? These blue colors are very hard to get printed properly. In my experience colors like that will end up looking purple or muddy.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!  ;D

Patrick - I appreciate the heads-up! I'm looking into classicarcadegrafix and have contacted them to discuss the color gamut they can reproduce. Output on my 6 color inkjet is definitely purple-ish unless I set every last color management setting meticulously. That seems to cool the blues back down, but they do go dark. I'm sure this sort of thing is much better left to a service bureau that can do the RGB-CMYK conversion and printer calibration much better than I. My own *similarly blue* CP overlay took me several HOURS to get right :(  If these have to go to Kinko's, I imagine I'll have to rework the colors in CMYK space and specify exact values for the blues based on the printer to be used....not unlike working with Pantone colors. *shudders*  Sure hope not!

And version 5. After some feedback from the builder.

Patrick - I just heard back from classicarcadegrafix.com (within an hour or so of my email....at 1AM! Man those people are on top of things!) Apparently their system isn't plauged by the blue - purple shift common in CMYK output. The Tomorrowland marquee I did (it's all kinds of blue) was printed by them and apparently turned out great. I'm dying to see it! Anyhow, I guess that doesn't help with the cocktail top since it's too wide for them.  Good thing to know in general though.  :)

PixelHugger:

You're Artwork is fantastic!

Any chance you can upload the MAME "badges" to Mahuti's Art Library?

http://www.localarcade.com/4images/

I love those MAME logos you've come up with and would like to use them in a marquee I'm thinking about.

Pixelhugger emailed me his MAME logo, but I was uable to open it with Illustrator 8. Any chance one of you guys who also have it could save it in a format I can use? I'd love to incorporate it into my bezel art.

How about a JPEG or PSD? What resolution/size would you prefer?
Title: Re:Custom art for cocktail project pics
Post by: Stingray on March 01, 2004, 12:29:37 pm
I'm not really sure what size it would need to be since I haven't even started on my bezel art. I guess there's no way it can be saved in whatever version of Illustrator that you use as a version that would be compatable with Illlustrator 8? I'd really prefer to stick with vector if possible.

In any case, thanks. I'm sure I speak for a lot of folks on this board when I say I really appreciate your willingness to share your artwork.

Would you be interested in posting it to the vector library?

If so send it to me.

If not, just let me know, no worries.

And if you are still having a problem stingray, I'm sure I can convert it to whatever format you need.

Muhuti, Pixelhugger has sent me the logo in PDF format. I'll let you know if I can use it after I get home tonight and try it out. If I still can't use it I'd very much appreciate it if you can convert it into a format that can be opened by Illustrator 8. Thanks for the offer!

They are posted earlier in this thread. Let me know if you are unable to see them for some reason.

If you email me I can send any of them to you. If you are a patient person I can modify the name for your cabinet, but that'd involve a bit of a wait.  ;) They exist in Adobe Illustrator ver. 10 format and are sized for a standard Midway cocktail. I can send you PDF versions viewable within Adobe Acrobat Reader, however as such they wouldn't be editable or changeable, so if you want to modify them you'll need a recent version of Illustrator.

Hope that helps  ;D

Too wide?  They print on a wide format plotter right?  Why can't they just rotate the image 90 degrees and print it?

BTW, awesome work!!  Makes me realize how badly my main Mame machines needs some good artwork.

Hi there!

Thanks very much for replying!
I did manage to see those, but they are only low res, would you be so kind to send me one hi res?
Yes you could send me the Illustrator file. I can open both.
You could even stuff it, if you like. I can open it from here.

The version I like is version 5, with version 4 a close 2nd!

If you could email me these on this address, I would be over the moon!!!!!!!

Your work is great, and you should be very happy that so many poeple wants to grace there tables with you artwork!

Do you do control panel overlays to match?
If so, would you like to do one to match version 5 for me?

May I thank you in advance for taking the time to help me.
Have a good day.

Here is ver. 1 for the control panel design. This is for the single player (narrow end) of the cab. The buttons and joystick bezels/balls are for layout only.  ::) Cheetah - any thoughts before I do the 2 player version?

Player one marquee thingie. (To be backlit and installed at a 90 deg. angle along rear edge of P1 control panel on narrow end of cab.)

EDIT: Oooops. Balls will be properly centered within the white trim in the actual file. I'll fix that after lunch sometime.  :-[

Two player marquee thingie. To be mounted along horizontal P1/P2 dual CP on wider side of cab.

Cheetah- here are a few versions to show alternate treatments around the buttons. What are people's thoughts on the button outlines? Appropriate? Superflous? Do they add to or take away from the overall CP look?
Title: Re:Custom art for cocktail project pics

And no outlines...

And another minor tweak. Changes the 4 way arrow treatment and enlarges the Timewarp type.

Post by: froggerman on April 15, 2004, 09:31:45 pm
I like the arrow treatment in the second example better, it fits in better. I don't like the outline around the inside of the buttons. Prehaps try something that only goes around the outside of the button group.

That's a great cocktail top.

Do you think you could post it on the vector lib in an ai file?
At least the template.  I've got a project that I'd like to make a custom top, but I'd like to have a good base template to work off of.

I need either a 300 dpi or an ai file that's scaleable to 32 X 22"

i love your cocktail underlay designs. are they available online in illustrator format?

i am currently planning on making a cocktail cab but it will have to be larger that the std pacman to accomodate a 21" monitor, so will need to resize and also would like to make a few personalization changes to the designs.

I was wondering if anyone here has a hi res copy of any of the cocktail bezels posted by pixelhugger at the beginning of this thread.  I messaged him but I'm not sure if I will get a response.  He doesn't seem to be too active on the boards recently.

Thanks
