Title: On the Frontline- rebuild help?
Post by: tommyinajar on August 04, 2019, 01:04:16 pm
I like playing on original cabs the most so I'm starting to do "single" game controls for a few specialized ones- (need help/idea's there too)

I'm going to build some hot-swap cp's for certain games, Defender, Major Havok, Star wars, Spy Hunter- but first I want to do FRONT LINE & TIN STAR by TAITO (the only 2 with this spinner, right).

Does anybody have a rebuild "how to"on the clickity spinner? I bought it 2 years ago (it's HUGE!) for $30 and it moves ok, but needs a freshening up, and does anyone have a link to wiring one up by chance?

I want to do FRONT LINE & TIN STAR by TAITO (the only 2 with this spinner, right).
There are 5 6 games that use this type of rotary 8-way/push controller.
- Front Line
- The Tin Star
- Wild Western
- Sheriff (Nintendo)
- Bandido (Exidy -- licensed re-release of Sheriff)
- Western Gun Part II (Taito -- licensed re-release of Sheriff)

The panel should have P1/P2 Start buttons, 8-way joystick, rotary 8-way/push controller, and one additional action button.

The parts breakdown on pg 12 of The Tin Star (https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/T/The%20Tin%20Star%20%20Manual.pdf) manual makes it look pretty straight forward.   :dunno

does anyone have a link to wiring one up by chance?
Wire it like an 8-way top-fire joystick.
- Ground to all common tabs
- U/D/L/R/Fire inputs to the NO tab on the corresponding microswitch

Taito version:

Nintendo version:

Eight clicks per rotation = a detent every 45 degrees.

If you start with the cam (#11 in the parts breakdown) pressing only the "up" microswitch and turn clockwise one click, the "up" and  "right" switches will both be pressed.  Turn another click CW and only "right" will be pressed . . .

EDIT: Forgot about Western Gun Part II.

I'm guessing here, but the game is going to be a lot harder with the factory spinner, not an 8-way joy for shooting, right?

A two stick robotron-style setup is more responsive for aiming than the rotary setup, but you'll still need a way to shoot.

Not sure how reliably diagonal shots would register, but you can map all four right stick (aim) directional keystrokes (defaults are Alt, Z, Shift, and X) to the P1 Button 1 input (shoot) so the same keystrokes that aim also shoot.

Mapping aim 8 way to fire also is how I remember it .
