Millipede...takes place on a playfield filled with mushrooms, flowers, and DDT bombs. Per yam's commentary in another topic, Centipede interested me, but I prefer Millipede.
-
Yikes! This is NOT going to end up well! I'm all in, but until there is consensus that people have trackballs installed. I'm not playing.
-

I don't know how you've misread it, but he said unless you want your compo empty then you should NOT pick a game with oddball controls!
-
Yep, I'm out. I'm not going to play a game without having the proper controls. Playing a game like this with a joystick/gamepad is simply too frustrating.
-
Using mouse, if that is not frowned upon.

-
So is consensus we are sticking with the Millipede?

That is quite respectable!! I have never played the game always preferred Centipede. MIllipede's odd looks and buzzing when you die and shooting arrows never appealed to me visually in arcades.
Here it is after maybe 6? tries and with trackball, yikes!
I guess the game is a go?
EDIT: Slight improvement.
-
Now we're talkin'!
A twitch game where you score depends solely on hand-eye coordination. No secrets, no patterns, no shops, no combos, no memorizing.
Just as Nolan intended.
101,784. Personal best. Yay me.

Hmm. I have a track ball and probably no excuses, but I'm happy I could scrape 19,574.

Mimic may not return to see this, but for information's sake, I was cock-teasing yam. He has a hard time staying away, so we'll probably see him playing this.
Centipede got my attention back then, because it was colorful and cool. But I played it once. Millipede got my attention in that it was a proper sequel to Centipede, and bested it. I played it a bunch of times.
-
Mimic may not return to see this,
Huh? I've been here the whole time. Even posted scores. Just vowed not to participate in the "purists club" thread (boy do I itch)
EDIT: Can't crack my previous score. I get so violently angry from this game I boil inside! Love it! Centipede I get into like zone, with this "thing" RAGE!
EDIT 2: BTW Jason's score is disqualified... All I see is his SAVED score (from who knows when) and then the real one is 1784 :lol ;)

Nope, there are games that I won't play, period. Playing games intensely for two weeks that I like or at least don't hate may become very frustrating, I won't ramp that up by using poor substitutes for controls that I don't have. You'll never catch me playing something like Breakout, for example, no matter what the incentive may be. Back in '16, when this compo was a very hotly contested championship challenge, refusing to play one game even cost me the title.
Anyway, you won't see me playing any game for the next ten weeks because on tuesday I had a very silly very nasty accident, I nearly ripped my right thumb off. It's broken, an artery, a tendon and a nerve are cut. I had two and a half hours of micro surgery and just came out of hospital yesterday. If I'm very lucky, I'll regain full use of the thumb, if not... I don't want to think about that. So, no gaming for me. The next months will be very boring indeed.

Ouch. Get better - we need the bar set. Good luck.
-
Christ, Yam, sorry about your thumb :o
What a terrifying thing to happen. May you heal quickly!
Better Millipede action this morning after a few games-
82,700

@mimic: I wondered. Seemed like you were taking a powder.
@yam: what a strange coincidence. Terrible.
And some scores. First is a kind of warm-up on Centipede. Decent score. Millipede is a 'haven't played in a long time, and did very well'....or not. This time was not. 57k after a few games. The last image is to show the increasing start level based on score of last game, a la Tempest.
-
Thanks, guys. I'll have to make do with watching you play. And watching a lot of TV. Also, reading a lot. Very boring. Maybe I'll try learning to use the mouse with my left hand and start to play turn-based RPGs. That would help killing some time.
-
62,692 was the highest I could get with a joystick. The score for this screenshot is lower because I forgot to save it with the 62,692 score.

I'm sorry to hear about your thumb, yam. If the desire to game is strong, maybe a SNES with this controller?

@acvieluf: I don't see how this could be used with only one hand. Seems to me that you have to use the thumb on the dpad or the buttons, so you can't do both simultaneously. Also, I'm not a fan of Nintendo. My first console was the PSX, so I don't know any 8/16bit Sega/Nintendo games. Of the seven consoles that I own one is a Nintendo. Guess which one got the least playtime by far.
@jasonbar: How the fonk am I supposed to use this monstrosity with one hand? I truly can't imagine how that works. Also, $350 for one controller? Nowadays, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a new console.
So, thanks for the suggestions, but I think I'll look for something mouse driven with maybe a few keyboard shortcuts. If I feel daring, I might start playing Baldur's Gate, that should keep me occupied for some time.
-
That SNES controller was made for turn based RPGs, not something like platformers, for sure.
Anyways, no worries. Hope you make a full recovery.

I'll let you decide, but the score he reported IS on his high score table. :dunno
-
Yep, but this doesn't prove that that score was done in the last few days.
-
Isn't Sunday, July 28th last day for this competition?
-
Yep, that (hopefully) wasn't the final scoreboard.
-
I vote that Wzrd0803's score of 62,692 be counted.
- This is a casual competition.
- Some games have their attract mode quirks about what scores they show (if they show high scores), or they give you very little time to capture your current score, etc.
- I don't believe that we spell out in black & white anywhere that your screen grab needs to be right after your game in question, rather than perhaps of your high score table after you've played 5X & it shows 5 scores & you submit your highest of those 5, even though that wasn't the last of the 5 games played.
Thanks,
-Jason

Thanks!
To prove a point, this screenshot is me just starting up Millipede on MAME today. Note there is NO scores of mine on it..just the default high scores.
-
All right, then. Wzrd0803 moves to 3rd place.

It's not like we're playing for a trophy or anything.... :lol
Speaking of this, what am I supposed to do with the trophy? It's still at home on my cab, and it's certainly welcome to stay! (haha) But alas, I don't feel right that it's still with me. What should we do with this?
(maybe this needs it's own thread?)
-
It isn't a competition, and perhaps the title should read so.
A new score. Was doing well close to 70k, and then it overwhelmed me. So dense a forest I couldn't hope to shoot the DDT cans.
-
And.....a new score. I got into the rhythm, and the patterns of the centipede and others lend to shooting them in groups if you siddle left to right under the formations.
-
It isn't a competition,
Why not?

If this is still running next weekend - I will give it a shot.
Centipede is my game..
I've never played Millipede on my cabinet..
140K is pretty good though..

No, it's not. You can look up the final day's date in the first post.

That will teach me to not pay attention! ;)

Still feel free to post your scores here for fun!

I will give it a shot!

@yam: No one wins. This is a friendly 'let's play a game together' kind of thing, which I prefer.
Still feel free to post your scores here for fun!
Yes. Do it. Do it now.
And what happened to you, jase? I thought you might take the weekend to try for a higher score.....
-
@yam: No one wins. This is a friendly 'let's play a game together' kind of thing, which I prefer.
This is because we have a lack of regular players. We practically had to drag the 2017 over the finish line to get a champion, at that time we had only 3 people who played regularly. So in 2018 we could either let the compo die or try something new, namely resetting the games list so that we could play some of the more popular games again which hopefully would get more people to play at least their favourite games. We also ditched the championship because it was pretty much clear from the start who the champion would be.
It's still a competition for the high scores, though.
What puzzles me is that we have so few players, yet so many people who are watching. The "games played so far" thread has more than 5k views, the "BYOAC high scores" thread has more than 7k views. So people are interested, but can't be bothered to participate. It's a bit sad.
-
I don't know if it's that or if they feel the pressure of competition even though it's pretty casual. In the past I've seen replies where people have said "played but didn't get a score worth posting" or things along those lines. I sometimes wonder if people feel like they shouldn't post unless they have a competitive score or else maybe more people would play and post. I'm always happy to post in last place.

-
And what happened to you, jase? I thought you might take the weekend to try for a higher score.....
Busy. Few chances to play. Usually get only 1-2 sessions per competition.
Got extra busy last weekend.
Plus, my impression of my high score was that it as very good relative to my abilities & that I couldn't top it...let alone top it by 40%! =O
Thanks for missing me. I'm blushing.
