Hey kids, let's go out in social settings and stare at a screen!

Can't be docked.  Can't remove controllers.  Half the features are missing.  Incompatible with marquee games.

This is a pacifier for small children, nothing more.

If they had made it clamshell or not shrunk the screen I'd have been all over this but agreed, it's a kids toy and a replacement for the 2ds

It does have a proper d-pad though... so it's got that.

But yeah, I'm not sure about this one. Also at $199 it's kind of a hard sell for me.

You'd think they'd do like the 2ds and make it around 100... I mean they have to be saving money considering it doesn't do half the stuff it's supposed to do.  It'll sell though because it's a Nintendo handheld variant... they always sell.

It will sell as alot of people only use their switch in portable mode. I have two and I can recall only twice when my family played on the tv. The rest of the time the kids are in some cubby somewhere playing them.

Mine is nearly always docked but I can see the sense in making a hand held only version.

Not worth £200 though imo.

This makes sense to me. The big deal for Nintendo this whole time is that they wanted to unify their console and handheld product lines (the games themselves, mostly, hardware secondary) and improve the hardware and experience in handheld gaming, and it looks like they've done a pretty good job to me. $200 is ok, it's about what the 3ds cost at launch, but it'll go down over time. Considering what hardware is inside, it packs a much better punch than a smartphone that costs several times that amount, and has a much better game library.

Yeah it does, but they've taken all the features out of the handheld that are costly (removable joycons, docked mode, large screen, ect.) yet the price isn't reflective of that.  If they are selling a pair of joycons for 60 and a dock for 90 then shouldn't the price of the handheld be reduced by about $150 and not a mere $100 ?

Like I said before, it'll sell, because it's a Nintendo handheld, but man even if it was for a kid I'd spring for the extra $100 bucks so it could be played on a tv and so joycons can be replaced when they inevitably wear out or get too nasty.  I mean joycon drift is still an issue for some people.... if you can't remove them then you have to send the whole system in... while your kids complain that they don't have anything to play.

I reckon this is a clever ploy tbh. Its priced at the level where parents will splurge for birthdays and Christmas. Soon enough they'll realise that the 'pro' model offers all the extra stuff so they'll end up double dipping. Bang - your in the ecosystem.

I don't know.  The poor kids all seem to have Kindles and the wealthy kids all have an iPad.  It'll be interesting to see how this experiment goes for Nintendo.
