Title: Canadian legality questions
Post by: acvieluf on May 09, 2019, 02:13:46 pm
There's a retro arcade operator in halifax that has a few locations.  Almost all (if not all) of his arcade cabs run X-in-1 boards, and he charges coins, not admission.  I'm originally from the US, and most google searches only net US results.

What does Canadian copyright law say about this?  I hope that i'm right, because attached are screenshots of me finally calling this guy out on his total crap-fest cabs.  The one pictured is BY FAR the best looking one he's ever produced.  Most look like they were assembled from garbage.

That side art is epic. Hope A1Up is taking notes.

The artwork vendor you referenced doesn't have permission to use any of the copyright artwork that he prints. All of it is illegal. That is no more legal than the Pac Crap cab you pictured. None of it gets enforced so it doesn't really matter. That is why you see people selling Star Wars cutting boards on Etsy.

Thanks Mike. I was really just wondering about charging coins for the x-in-1 play. But I assume that it's the same.

Yup. You are just more likely to get in trouble if it is out in public. Our local drive in theater has a pac man with a 60 in 1. It's been there for years.

I saw a woman drop $4,100 on an awful multicade cabinet at ZapCon.  And the guy selling them was almost out of receipts on his pad.  I'm clearly in the wrong business.

Also, that dude was a creepy used car salesman. He tried to sell me his ---smurfy--- gingerball clone.

I wish I would have talked to him. He would hate me.

I don't know what I find funnier, he tried to sell it to you or what I imagine the look on your face was when he tried.

His face when I showed him Ginger 2.0 was the funniest part.

"Oh yours doesn't have force feedback?"
"Why didn't you add a real DMD?"
"I used a high end ASUS monitor for the play field, its kind of obvious yours is a TV."

His lock down bar was better than mine though. I like a real metal bar over the 3D printed one Ginger has. Not sure how it was mounted, there wasnt a receiver cause there was no access in the front. I don't understand using cheap buttons either. I mean maybe for the start/coin button but not for the flippers and nudge.
