Title: Looking used/new PC for running Groovy/Steam
Post by: ekinskofer on April 27, 2019, 02:26:37 pm
Hey guys,

My old mame pc died in my cabinet and I'm just starting to read all the info on GroovyMame/CRT_emudriver so apologies if there are other threads covering this, I'm a little overwhelmed.

Looking for a PC hopefully under $500 that will run GroovyMame/CRT_emudriver OR run on linux and play some newer games as well on an arcade monitor. I have a Wells Gardner 27D9202 in my cabinet. Games I'm interested in playing are CupHead and Castle Crashers if possible. This may be outside the scope of this group, however, I'd love to make this possible. I've seen footage on youtube of Cuphead running on CRT's.

If someone could suggest a CPU/MOBO/GPU that I should start looking out for on Craigslist or perhaps a new setup that would satisfy my budget, I would be super grateful.

many thanks in advance

Eric

Mame doesn’t require much for gpu. I am currently using hd5450, which is on the low end but perfectly fine. For steam games, i was able to run new king of fighters fine. I got one of the newer street fighters and it had to be on absolute lowest graphic settings. So... mixed results.

For pc, i went with a mini atx asus p8h61m r2 with 4gb ram, ssd, and an lga 1155 3.1ghz i3. It was quick and on the cheaper side. But over the last 3 years i only put a few hours of runtime on it (been programming attractmode layouts on my imac). Probably took longer to install windows and crt emudriver than actual play time. ---smurfing--- motherboard died. Finding out that i can get newer motherboards and cpu socket for same price or cheaper.

Can today games run in 320x240 and not complain of a too low screen resolution ?

I dont know? Desktop resolution is 640x480, so if game supports that resolution your all good. KOF13 had 640x360. I added that modeline with crt emudriver and it worked.

Thanks for the slap..  :o I should have done my homework on the minimum resolutions and my monitor before posting. 800x600 is possible with this monitor, but severely shortens the lifespan. I think that I'll dedicate this machine to retro only games and then build a PC/PS4 for newer fighting games and purchase a couple of HORI sticks.

I'm not looking for a used/new PC for this build that can handle up to N64/DC emulation. PS2 would be awesome, but that requires some horsepower from what I read. Please let me know your thoughts. Many thanks!

cheers.
E
