General Rules:

- Highest score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Good luck!

Parent rom panic.zip is needed.

"The magazine reported that the average play time was 30 seconds."

Uh-oh.

Eh, let's just go with panic.zip?  I'll modify the original post.

My goodness, but Universal games, from a technical perspective, sure were primitive back then. I was going to say "more primitive" than average, but a search on KLOV for 1980s games shows lots of vectors, lots of other primitives, & some sophisticated gems.

I used to own this game. One of my earlyish purchases. Mid/late 90s. Hard to imagine justifying investing enough space for a dedicated game as simple as this, now that MAME makes the whole baloney nearly infinitely more convenient & efficient.

Totally awesome artwork.
I modded mine (or whatever we said said back in the early 90s...). The cabinet art was so gorgeous that 2nd lower unlit marquee just needed to backlit to make it pop!
Super easy mod.
Barely a mod, really...

I remember the game being challenging, especially with the tougher aliens. Lots of quick deaths. Lots of waiting around.
This time around, I enjoyed it more--the controls felt more fluid than I recalled. The sounds and graphics abrasive, the gameplay captivating. I just might actually play this one a second time over the next 2 weeks!

Enjoy my 4420 effort cut short by an alien getting...really...friendly with me?

We'll see if that's any good.

I didn't care for this game back then. The art was weird. What is that technology looking thing in his mouth? It looks like he made a ship his mouthpiece. But....

Universal games did seem to be made in the early 70s.

@jasonbar: yes, that was a brutal ending. I can imagine it scared some kids. I can imagine it was too close to....home....for some.

I got a score of 4440, but it matters not. This is a terrible game - no less nothing space about it - though you can see where they got the idea for Mr. Do's Castle, a great successor. Maybe play that.

6,190. Getting better. Can't stand to play it for more than a few minutes, though.

Don't like where you're sitting right now?

You should probably try repositioning in space, then.
Yes, it's a game all about adjusting your posture, chair height, arm rests, & monitor height. The original ergonomic video games. Years ahead of it's time, so vastly understood.
