Title: What is this? Potentiometer Hack?

Hey guys - I was trying to tweak the monitor settings on my Heavy Barrel cab last night. I tried all the pots I could reach, but I couldn't get it to stretch vertically. I noticed the pot in the photo, which seems to have been randomly spliced into a wire connected to the monitor. Decided to try adjusting it also.

Now the screen is a mess of vertical lines, sometimes moving, sometimes static--and I can't get the picture to normalize again. Any thoughts? It appears (see other photo) that the monitor is an Electrohome G07C80. It was playing fine before this, just the screen wasn't filling the space.

why someone would do this is beyond me... but it sounds like it the sync line.  I would remove it..
