Title: 14 years
Post by: Hoopz on March 26, 2019, 12:18:39 pm
Apparently I registered on the forums 14 years ago today. I had lurked for awhile but had to register so I could post in Ponyboy's thread to buy stuff.

Haven't been active here for a couple years so I looked around a little. Nice to see a few old familiar names still here. And a few trolls still living out their bullying fantasies...

I started on the arcade1up thread. I skipped pages 2-16 and noticed the bourbon posts on page 17. Some stuff never changes around here which is nice.

Hope all you dorks are doing well and hitting daily high scores.

Crazy. Checked my registration and it will 14 years for me on Sunday.

We've moved from marble paper to wipe off control panel overlays on 3' high cabs now which is something I didn't see coming. ;D

There was a while thing about sign up dates being wrong when we changed servers or smf versions a long time ago. Saint found a post of mine older than my sign up date. Either way, congrats, rookie ;)

You can thank Arcade1up for that.  :timebomb:

I've been here 13 years and a couple months, so you are like a big brother to me Hoopz.

About the time I joined too. 14 years ago was a good era for the hobby.... Vendors and parts were established and cabinets were plenty and cheap. Just a ton of software and frontends being developed. On the flip side cabinets were still usually massive and not putting a trackball on your CP was pretty much unheard of.

Good points.  I hadn't thought about it but you are right almost every CP had a trackball on it back then.  Not so much now.

Where'd the trackballs go?  Four player CPs with trackball, spinner, Tron joy, dedicated 4 ways, etc are out now?

Those control panels are only in if you put them on an Arcade1Up bartop.

There are still people doing good work here. There isn't as much innovation because the hobby has matured. Over the years people have figured out what works and what doesn't.

So true. I don't post much but I still go through the boards from time to time.  Still a lot of amazing projects.

Safe to assume the Arcade1Up has taken the place of the GGG/Ultimarc battles and pissy posts?

I bought a pallet of those things. More information here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,159663.msg1679262.html#msg1679262

The Arcade1up "discussion" has its ups and downs. There is the vocal "it's the worst thing ever" group and the "it's not so bad" group. We don't have any emphatic Arcade1up lovers group. Right now, the Arcade1up Facebook group is reminiscent to how this place was a decade ago.

Lots of very clean projects in Project Announcement. Not a ton of innovation going on.

Probably more accurate to say that RetroPi battles took the place of GGG/Ultimarc ones. Now A1up's pissy posts are replacing the Pi ones.

It still brings a tear to my eye every time PaigeOliver pipes in and tells everybody how horrible the Pi is. Don’t ever change, dude.

I think the angled joysticks is still a slow drip to this day. It comes up every once in a while, rearing it's ugly head.

Two-year contract almost up. I've been putting in applications and checking the listings (I work for the state employment office and can call dibs on a lot of job openings).

I added a few more from when I had my Intellivision website back in 2000. I was going to try and do 1 for each game to show some game play. Back then I was basically taking screenshots with one hand and trying to show some game play with the other. :) I didn't get very far and they pretty much look like crap. Still brings back memories though.

A local guy has made his own arcade game that reminds me of the Intellivision classic Astrosmash.  He has created a custom cabinet for it as well and they just installed one at our local barcade.

Not sure what you are showing here. Is it that I am old and have been a member here for a long time? That is actually a date that is later than when I originally signed up. There was a database crash I believe and everyone that had been signed up with an original date got changed to that date give or take. I think I signed up around 2000 somewhere. I know that is when I got my first IPac that I still have. And when I had my Intellivision site. :)

Edit: Found a link to my old Intellivision site. Can you tell I made it using real (basic) HTML code?!? YUK!

On October 5th and it is already here! From the UK to MN in 7 days. That is some sweet shipping! I know what I am doing tonight. Thanks Andy!

The oldest post of yours in the archives is from 10/11/2001 "Power from the PC (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/Archives/messages/33449.html)"

I have seen many posts about getting power from your PC and I was wondering if there were any sites on how that works. Like what wires make what voltages and so on. How to ground. How not to kill yourself or burn down your cab or your house. Things like that. I would like to power my coin door with the pc but I would like some examples and or pictures on how to do that. I get nervous with things like that. Thanks.

There's a gap in archived posts between 6/15/2001 and 10/11/2001,

I guess it was 2001. My bad. I recently reprogrammed that IPac. I had to find a computer with XP on it and I tried it like 6-7 times changing the clock speeds until it worked.

I must have picked up my empty arcade cabinet in August 2001. I found some old pictures that have a created date of 8-21-2001. I am pretty sure I was on this site before that because that is how I found out about the IPac and making a mame machine. Damn I'm old. :(

Yeah you were around before then... my swiss cheese memory retains that much.

Speaking of ipacs I think I'm finally going to upgrade all the ones I have left....they are first revision ipacs and as you've noticed it can be a pain in the butt getting them reprogrammed.  I might risk bursting into flames by replacing them with zero delays.  (Don't hit me.)

I remember killer clown group got grumpy and I found BYOAC.
My first windows PC. Windows ME first came out.... Soon down graded to 98 till XP came out.
I only got it to emulate Atari 8 bit and C64. I found out about MAME  and never looked back.

Even the early 2000s still feel like later emulation history to me. I remember checking Zophar's Domain for emulation news every day, SNES emulators that would shade everything monochrome yellow unless you paid for it. When the first N64 emulator was finally capable of running homebrew pong at 2fps, then everyone's minds collectively blowing when UltraHLE came out and actually running Mario64 at a reasonable frame rate  with a 3dfx accelerator.

Those were exciting times.

Checking Dave's Classics and Retrogames every day, Nesticle in Windows 95 running on real DOS, spending all day downloading an N64 ROM over dialup, IRC, Usenet, etc. Good times.

I bought a 3Dfx card specifically for UltraHLE. I got it to run decently but I only had a keyboard to play with an N64 games didn't work well with that so I really never played anything. I owned a Nintendo 64, but I was just always really into emulation.

I'm trying to remember if there was a real push for GLIDE wrappers prior to UltraHLE. Seeing it run on a friends Voodoo 2 was one thing, but watching it struggle along on a Rage Pro with a wrapper was even more amusing to me realizing how many layers of abstraction were happening.

I was thinking about that earlier this week while researching how to get Diablo II to run best under Win 10. Apparently 3dfx emulation is considered 'best'.
