Title: Help with Makvision M2929D4G-TS
Post by: Yardley on March 24, 2019, 04:28:43 pm
Hi all, I am currently using a PVM-20L2 and I am looking to pickup a Makvision M2929D4G-TS for use with my GroovyMAME PC. This monitor takes a VGA input and has the following specs:

Horiz Freq: 30-40 KHz
Vert Freq: 47-90 Hz

Excuse my ignorance, but will I need to change any settings in CRT Emudriver? I was thinking I'd have to change the preset to one of the 31Khz options and change the Windows 7 display options to output at 60Hz? Or would I be better off with a regular MAME build using the stock video card driver since this monitor accepts 31Khz?

Is that a CRT or is it an LCD?

When you set up CRT Emudriver, I think you should pick the "Makvision 2929D" preset.

Wow I totally missed that before! So after changing the preset I just have to generate and install new modes and that should be it? I also keep the csync option enabled for use with my PVM's, I'm guessing I should probably disable it for the Makvision?

For Mame, you should buy the Makvision tri-sync crt. They are still available new from Happ and Betson. I have one. They do 15khz (cga), 24khz (EGA) and 31khz (vga).

For CRT EMU you should choose the tri-sync option so you will be able to play every game at native res.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am acquiring the monitor for free. I do have a few PVM's and a NEC XM29 which is tri-sync but I wanted to see how I can utilize the Makvision. So I'm guessing it will probably only do 640x480 interlaced and maybe progressive?

When I was running GroovyMame on my D2929 in years past, I had multiple modes set up that were just exactly 2X scaled from the native resolutions, progressive. Since it's integer scaling, there's no blurring, however the higher dot pitch of the monitor does lessen the scan-line look.. It ends up looking really crisp.
