Title: Is there a way to reduce dead zone of JLF after hitting the switch?
Post by: equlizer on March 20, 2019, 09:47:34 pm
I'm finding that after you move left or right or whatever direction you are using, there is a dead zone before you hit the wall of the square or octo gate.  Is there a way to reduce that?

Increase the diameter of the actuator sleeve at the point it makes contact with the gate.

What would be the best way of doing that? Thank you.

You want a 0.5mm actuator.  I've heard the "delrin" material is much better at taking a beating than the actuator you'll find on focusattack.com.  Unfortunately they are sold out at paradisearcadeshop.com at the moment.

Whether a mod is correct or incorrect would depend on what you're going for.
Shmup fans would want a reduced engagement zone was well, but they probably wouldn't be using square gates.

I use octogates and i already fixed it so i have a small engagement area.  I want the outside area to be less so the stick doesnt go so far out before it returns to center.

Fixed all my problems.  I used the aluminum tape that is used on ducts.  Was able to make the engage area very small and the outer part very small.  No play at all anymore!

I’ve been resisting the urge to say “tape” for a week.... and here we are.

If duct tape doesn't fix it, you aren't using enough duct tape.  Apparently this applies to aluminum duct tape as well.

I doubt the tape will last. I would have looked for, had someone make, or 3D printed another actuator. I was thinking of this the other day for this kind of joystick design.

would i just take it in and tell them i want something like this but say want 2mm thicker on top and 3mm on bottom and profit?  I can get something printed for free at the local library but i need a file to send them.  Someone would have to make a 3d printer file for me :(

There are three options here (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3441890) on Thingiverse.

If one of those .stl files doesn't fit properly, it wouldn't be hard to make a parametric version in OpenSCAD.

Paradise arcade makes oversized actuators. Might want a stiffer spring too. Cost peanuts.

Yes, as a custom gate is harder to come by, let alone one that fits well.
