Title: Is there any benefit to updating my video card from ATI 4550 in GroovyArcade?
Post by: jimmyj1979 on January 06, 2019, 11:02:15 pm
Hey guys

I play mostly 384x240 or 320x240p 2D games on my 15khz Monitor.

is there any tangible benefit to updating the ATI 4550 to a ATI 5xxx or ATI 6xxx card?

With GroovyArcade I am getting accurate WxH resolutions for horizontal games, however for vert games rendered for horizontal, my card could be struggling, but im not sure.

Not achieving 100% speed on vertical games does not necessarily mean your card is struggling. Check this. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,159238.msg1674477.html#msg1674477)

I wouldn't bother upgrading. In Linux, the compatibility gap between HD 4xxx and HD 5xxx is not as drastic as in Windows. Both work reasonably well. You'll get gradual benefits by upgrading, but only for higher work loads like running super resolutions, etc. Super resolutions are not so relevant in Linux anyway.

Anyway, if you had no card at all and you were to buy a new one, it would be absurd to get an HD 4xxx today, whatever your OS was, unless you wanted to run Windows XP.

What? O_o

You mean there's no limits in the number of custom resolutions we can define like we have in Windows?

Indeed in Linux GM adds the new resolutions on the fly and deletes them on exit. Infinite number of modes in practice.

I've been doing this wrong all the time. Jeez.  :badmood:

Now I'll have to try GM in Linux.
