Title: Question for the FPS players.
Post by: SilverVice on February 09, 2004, 04:47:24 pm
I have a question for the FPS players. Do you know if a PC mouse with a gun trigger exist? I mean that would be very cool to have the feeling of a gun trigger instead of a mouse click when we shoot, don't you think? And lightguns are not even close to be quick or precise enough. That would be awesome with Call of Duty. Mmm... I might try to build one.

I remember seeing one a few years back... the "Doom Gun", I believe it was called. It was a horrible failure and the gaming mags panned the heck out of it. A cursary Google search came up with nothing, so I can't be sure that is the proper name for it. Good luck! Sounds like you should Build Your Own Mouse Control (BYOMC? Hm...)

You might check out the Gyration products.

http://www.gyration.com/

The accuracy is supurb, and it has a trigger button, though it is used to tell the mouse that you want it to start using its gyroscopes.  Maybe it could be remapped, though, to be the left mouse button and the gyroscopes could be set to "always on".

Even with all that, though, your game would suffer so much that as soon as the novelty of the trigger wore off you would just go back to a regular mouse.

Just buy a Nintendo 64 and pick up Turok 2.  Great game.  Fires with a trigger button.  An N64 and Turok combined will cost less than a gyration mouse.    :)

No, what I want it's just like a regular optical mouse (you know on a mouse pad) but with my hand positioned like it was a gun (and slightly tilt on the left) with one or two triggers and a reload button on the back.

I've never seen an optical mouse like that. You could take a cheap plastic gun, like those $10 PSX Light Guns and epoxy or melt it onto the top of a cheap optical mouse. Wouldn't look like much and would make it more difficult to aim with the mouse.

I just hold a squirt gun in my left hand and pull the trigger whenever I shoot with my right hand.  Admittedly it's hard to manipulate the keyboard directional keys with a squirt gun in my hand, but it's worth it for the trigger.

This is the closest thing I've seen, it's expensive though.

The thing is, if you are pulling a trigger, you may pull your aim up with it as well.  Especially in big time fire fights where the other guy is strafing.

Back in my UT days I actually used a Microsoft Sidewinder in my right hand and a trackball for aiming with left.   You have the tactile feel of pulling a trigger, the z-rotation was great for turning, and you had plenty of thumb buttons for reloading/switching weapons/etc.

What the hell??? LMAO.  Why do companies come out with gimmicke crap like this?  It never works the way you would think it should and they always want too much money for them.  You find a ton of these ---daisies--- at computer shows in the next year or so i bet , because no one will buy them from any store lol.
I don't mind entertaining the idea of new products for FPS games, but damnit, this kinda crap just isn't responsive enough for the FPS games that they taunt them to be good for.    Maybe for flight sims or something, but not FPS's.

Maybe ONE DAY someone will come up with something creative enough to gravitate from the mouse, but the mouse has been around for a long time and for good reason....ITS FUNCTIONAL.....AND ITS SIMPLE! :)
Until they can meet those requirements  keep the crappy products off the market!
Nuff' said! lol....ok...i'm done hehe.

There IS a use for that thing, it is half the price that my powerpoint remote was, although my Powerpoint remote (mouse, in a remote control form factor) works all the way across the room.

yea, i can see it for that, but not for FPS games like many of those kinds of peripherals say they were made for.  Powerpoint or just plan ol' sitting your butt on the
couch web surfing. But definatly not for fps games.  ;)

For FPS I haven't found a replacement for the mouse yet but I know of one for the keyboard. Just use the mouse like normal and hold a gamepad in your left hand. Use the d-pad for forward, back and strafe left and right. If the gamepad has a trigger on the left side then set it up for alt fire or crouch. I play much better using this combo rather than the mouse + keyboard. Another alternative is the Nostromo n50 SpeedPad.
