It's an optical (mouse) encoder.  It doesn't have an inherent resolution like an analog (potentiometer) encoder.

It just monitors the data lines (A and B) and reports the transitions from one phase to another.

This quadrature waveform is what you would see on the data lines when you turn the spinner/trackball clockwise. (1  2  3  4  1  2  3  4 . . .)
- Phase 2 to Phase 3 ==> move the mouse position 1 step right.

If you turn it counter-clockwise, the waveform flips horizontally.  (4  3  2  1  4  3  2  1 . . . )
- Phase 2 to Phase 1 ==> move the mouse position 1 step left.

Optical devices attached to the Opti-Wiz do have a resolution.
- The Spin-Trak (http://www.ultimarc.com/SpinTrak.html) produces 1200 pulses per revolution.
- The Electric ICE-T (https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=74&products_id=270) trackball uses high res encoder wheels that produce twice as many pulses per revolution as standard trackball encoder wheels. (Calculating the precise number of pulses per trackball revolution requires more fancy math than I'm willing to do at this time.   :P)
