I recently started restoring an Atari Asteroids Deluxe and was shocked to find that the volcano buttons are really hard to come by and expensive.
So I'm working on creating a new button design that will look and act like the lighted Atari volcano buttons from the top but use modern arcade switches below. The button design will support the thin metal control panels and 1/2 and 3/4 inch wooden control panels.
I've created the new button parts as 3d models and 3D printed them for testing. Once I have fully tested the buttons I will post some pictures.
Is this something that anyone else would be interested in using?
Cheers!

I don’t know that I’d use them, but I’m certainly interested in seeing how you do it. Keep us posted.

Yes, this would be awesome. Was doing a little research on doing this myself the other day.

"Volcano Button Project"
oh cool.
"Username: VolcanoButtonProject"
Oh, it's one of those new unknown vendor threads. :-\
Do you have another account for the Atari Asteroids Deluxe restoration?
-
I'm new to this forum and I seem to be making some posting mistakes. I will keep my project to myself.
I was just trying to see if there was any interest in what I was working on.

I'm sure there is, but why would you choose a username specific to ONE project?
That's more the type of thing you'd do for a business.
-
The name seemed like a good idea at the time. I will work on my project and come back when I've had a chance to fully test out the buttons. Maybe I will even create a new account.
Cheers!

We're interested.

Nobody can blame me for this one.

Curious. Lew comes down from on high and wants to box me when I am involved in a thread like this.

There's a reason why people seek out the originals. Glad I stocked up on a handful... what?... almost a ---smurfin---' decade ago? Damn. Still haven't used em...
For those of you who missed the pics, the OP made some 3D printed buttons that resembled Atari cone buttons. Everyone and their grandma has a 3D printer, just share the files.
-
Guess I'll just keep being a jerk.
I ordered some repro tall and short aluminum cones for $3 each. Linking to the vendor would violate forum rules since they sell multi-boards.
Too impatient to wait for it to come in to figure out the thread size, so off to lowes to pick up one of these which supposed to screw right in per another post on BYOAC.

Bit pricey, but will be useful in figuring out specs for illuminated switches.
Nephasth, would you be willing to dig out your buttons and calipers to give me the diameter of the original plunger?
Edit: corrected link. Original one was for a "normally on" switch.
Threads of switch are M12x1.25
I kind of doubt the originals were metric. OP in the other thread probably forced it into 1/2" threads.

LOL, yeah I did the same. I've got a few sitting in my stash collecting dust. Hoarder style.

This post (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,11123.msg86988.html#msg86988) says the originals were 15/32-32.
15/32" ==> 0.46875" = 11.9063mm.
32 Threads Per Inch ==> 0.0313" = 0.7938mm.

Does this mean we can make purple cone buttons now?
Purple PLA is cheap at the moment. ;)

I know you like to play the victim card, but I never once threatened you.

Does that mean I can change my username to "IMakeButtonLabelDecals"?
