Hello I can’t seem to get my happ analog flight stick to work in mame for say afterburner. I have it and the buttons wired in parallel with my player 1 controls but it does nothing. Is there a specific mapping in mame like you do for trackball and spinners or am I missing something else, thx.

What you're missing is that's not an analog stick.
It's an 8-way triggerstick with U/D/L/R microswitches.
An analog stick uses potentiometers and an analog encoder like A-Pac, U-HID, KADE miniArcade 2.0, etc.

So which set up in mame do I use. There lots of options and I have sticks, spinners, guns and trackball set but can’t get this to move on directions. Buttons will work though, thx

The directional (U/D/L/R) microswitches work exactly like any other 8-way joystick.
- Check that the wiring is on the microswitch COM and NO tabs.
- Test using either a keyboard test utility or controller properties in Control Panel.
(not sure what type of encoder you're using :dunno)
In analog stick games like Afterburner, the four default MAME input X- and Y-axis "INC" and "DEC" settings should be Up, Down, Left, and Right.
- If a game works with your normal 8-way stick, it should work with the 8-way triggerstick.

So when you try to assign joystick directions in mame e.g. up, down, left and right, nothing is toggled? It should work the same as your other joysticks. Maybe take the plugs of the working joystick and plug it into the flight stick.

Personally I'd send that back. I know trigger sticks are getting rarish and all, but $150 for a mere 8-way stick, which is NOT the proper interface for flight games in mame is highway robbery.

I thought the same thing on the price. What would you recommend for a flight stick, my joysticks are ultimarc j-sticks. I didn’t get the ultrasticks because of lighted ball tops and I thought those would do everything but I wanted to use led blinky with sticks and buttons so chose otherwise. Thx.

I'd just get a cheap usb flight stick for the pc. It's not something you really want on a cab permanently anyway. If you insist on adding it to your control panel ultimarc and groovy game gear probably have something that'll work well.

If you want an analog USB flightstick, here's a great choice.

I use this:

It is fully analog and uses magnets (like Ultrastick).

Flight sticks are a little too "odd-ball" to have permanently installed on a main (and only).control panel.
I have been work on interchangeable control panels for my set up so I can play with a little compromise as possible. I wish someone would make some more multi-use controllers. A sidewinder-type joystick with a trigger button could easily convert to a directional gun or a racing wheel by changing the outer shell like they do for Wii remote peripherals.

Not to mention those old sticks take a strong arm to move around. People think P360s are bad...... The Euro digital flight stick (Sanwa base) is a winner. But yeah you have the wrong type of stick.

So I finally got back to remapping mame controls and everything works except the problem I had before that when I try to map the analog stick section none of my joysticks will register only my mouse, spinners and trackball.

Did you enable joysticks? Joysticks aren't enabled by default in mame..... check your mame.ini
-
Yes they are. I’m using ultimarc mini pacs so it sees them as keyboards. The joysticks register in mame just not for the analog stick

Since you're using an 8-way instead of an analog stick, map the six "INC" and "DEC" inputs to your four 8-way stick directions (the defaults should work) and two throttle up/down buttons.
Set the "AD Stick X Analog" and "AD Stick Y Analog" inputs to "none" to block any trackball/mouse inputs.

Got it working, thx guys

I am in the market for a decent flight stick as well. The 200-503 you mentioned has great reviews, but I wanted something to use for Spy Hunter as well and this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-4-playstation/dp/B07DLKVKD5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Thrustmaster+T-Flight+Hotas+X&qid=1595018710&sr=8-1
comes with a left joy that could be used as a high/low gear shifter. It's somewhat cheap in price though so I was wondering about build quality. Have you (or anyone else) used this?

I have never used a HOTAS setup.

Me either.... I need to get one, but the problem is most aren't ambidextrous and I'm left handed. I've been using this:
https://www.amazon.com/Catz-Pacific-AV8R-Stick-PlayStation-3/dp/B00G0PPWUC (https://www.amazon.com/Catz-Pacific-AV8R-Stick-PlayStation-3/dp/B00G0PPWUC)
You can get it for $20-$30 most of the time. The mini throttle on the front as well as the buttons on the base are straight wired, so if you wanted to you could easily make an external throttle for it, which is what I plan to do when I get time.
Thrustmaster and Saitek seem to be the go to companies for flight sticks though, so in general I'm sure the one you picked would work just fine.
