Hi,
I am trying to get VMMaker to install the modelines for GroovyMame but instead of finding the 120 or so that other people get, mine is finding 1000. I am using the latest version of CRT Emudriver 2.0, latest MAME (203) version and latest Groovymame (202) version along with MAME 0.185 set (latest available).
Here is what is displayed on my VMMaker: (It has been like this for ages and its not doing anything else).

I read about having to enable "Magic" resolutions by changing a value in the VMM.ini file, specifically "mode_table_method_xml 1" to "mode_table_method_xml 2". However, this just makes VMMaker crash after I press generate modes.

You'd better include some more info, like your PC, graphics card, OS.
Are you using XP?
I'm using XPx64 on core2duo 2.93 GHz with Radeon X1050 card, and I had a very similar problem with VMM crashing on generating modes from xml using GM 0.200 or vanilla MAME 0.200 or just plain mame0200.xml file. I reported the issue here, but nothing really happenned. However, I didn't/can't expect much because I'm using XP and nobody really wants to support XP anymore. I suspect that it is an incompatibility problem with xml generation/format in later versions of Mame (and therefore inherited by Groovymame too).
The only way I found to get around the issue was to use an older groovymame.exe (I used GM 0.179) to generate the mode list by xml.
BTW - there is nothing wrong with VMM creating 1000 or so modes, normally it will cull them back automatically, keeping the best ones

Thank you. It feels silly it was something that simple!
So now VMMaker looks like this after generating modes (pic 1 below). But when I open Groovymame, select game the "specs" menu appears (pic 2) but the game stays in 640x480 interlaced. I am guessing VMMaker didn't actually install the modes I want? Or perhaps a setting somewhere in Groovymame needs to be changed, but I can't find anything.

Magic resolutions (1234x) were used on XP, they're not used on 7 (don't work anyway). You don't actually have to parse MAME if you're already using super resolutions (2560x). Don't follow old guides. Just follow the ones linked in CRT Emudriver's download thread.
Despite that GM is working fine judging by the picture you posted. Keep in mind you're testing a vertical game.

Ok got it, yes I'm using the user_super.ini. I tried some other games and they were fine and non-interlaced. I looked at the modelist file and it appears that the 1941 game is meant to display interlaced.
