Title: Got my first cabinet !! Have a few questions
Post by: pumpkinpie on September 20, 2018, 01:29:45 pm
Hey all - after months and months of scouring my local used market I have finally managed to pick up an old arcade cabinet and am very excited !!

The marque lights up and the coin mechanism works but the monitor is not working at the moment.  When you start it up you can hear the gameplay sounds and you can hear it when you insert a coin but there is no picture.  The guy I bought it off of said it was working last week when it was at his friends place but it stopped working when they moved it to his place.

Regardless I am excited about getting this thing back to a good working condition as the cabinet is in okay shape but is beat up a little around the edges.

Now my questions are :

1) what cabinet do you think this was originally for ?  I know the game inside is P-47 but I don't think the cabinet is a P-47 original.  At least I don't think so from the pictures I found online.

2) is there anything I can look for specifically with the monitor to try and get it working ?  My GF's son likes to tinker with electronics and has picked up a few old TV's in the past and fixed them up so this would be right up his alley.  The guy I bought it off of mentioned something about it holding a charge even though its not plugged in, is there something I need to do before we can work on it ?

3) if I don't get the monitor working I would try and sell off the motherboard and supply as I will probably put my own guts inside - would these be worth something on the used market ?

Thanks for any help you can offer - here are the pics !

Sorry I cant seem to insert the pics but here is a link to Imgur.

Yeah CRT monitors have big capacitors in which will give you one hell of a belt if you dont discharge them first and they can hold that charge for a very long time!

Could be several things with the monitor, Look for any loose wires/cables re-seat plus etc.
If its DOA it may need the flyback looking at or a re-cap.

Google discharging crt.  It's scary the first time cause it's a big pop.  Even if it bites ya, it won't kill ya.  Will hurt like all hell, though.  Also, the spasm the jolt can cause can toss your arm/hand into the frame and housing.  Just be careful.

Looks like a Sega Space Attack cabinet.

Actually, the tube itself is the giant melt your fillings capacitor.
so discharge that.
twice.

That sounds so scary....Technically it doesn't melt, but blows out of your tooth in a solid chunk. (Don't ask how I know that. ;))

Congrats! Does it seem like the monitor is getting power? Humming? Dim light? or completely dead? Sometimes dead is a good sign. Check if power is going to monitor. Check fuses as well. Also, check for molex connectors placed in reverse, or swapped with other molex connectors. You will need to identify your monitor model and find a manual to check wiring placement.

Honestly, blowing a crt neck is a bigger worry of mine when working on a monitor. (Breaking the narrow piece of glass on the back of the crt.) Will cause an implosion.

Had that happen to the very first monitor I tried to pick up from a collector. He wanted to "help" me load up some parts, then necked the tube... :banghead:

Arcade monitors are worth trying to fix. Check power on both sides of isolation transformer, where it terminates on the monitor, the fuse on the monitor. Does it turn on? Tube should make a noise and get slightly brighter. If so, perhaps you have no input video. Check the molex connector and it’s orientation. Try a different board. I’ve heard of instances where people thought it was the monitor and sold cab cheap, but it was a game board dying.

thanks for all the replies !!

my girlfriends son took a look at the monitor last night and said a fuse was burnt out so he is going to pick one up today and see if that works.

he took an electrical course and likes to tinker with electronics so I'm pretty sure if it can be fixed then he will find a way.

KK is 100% correct on what cabinet you have.

Well, that's horrifying.
If I could manage to keep my head level the fillings would just stay in the tooth and slowly harden back up after I let go of the chasis.
But if their going to blow out....

Just wrap some aluminum foil around that fuse and stick er back in.
If something starts smoking then you found the bad component!
If not and it works then it was the fuse.

ok. don't do that. :)
if they moved it and it stopped working then a connector probably came loose because they weren't gentle with it.
A loose connector with a bad connection can cause a fuse to blow.
I would check all the connections.
Pull them off one at a time and re-seat them.
