I'm not sure what the difference is. Could somebody explain? Also, could a 49 be used as an 8 or vice versa?
-
I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess, I'd say a 49 way would be capable of directing your character not only to 0o 45o 90o 135o etc., but also 7o 15o 22o 30o 37o, and so on...
I'm pretty sure that 49 ways are infinitly more difficult to encorperate with a computer and are only used for a handfull of games too.
-
i think the only games that make proper use of them are gauntlet legends, blitz, and sinistar

A 49-way uses optics to detect where the joystick is. It's a poor mans analog stick. Think of a 7x7 grid. The optics are laid out 7 on the x axis, and 7 on the y axis. So there are 3 degrees to the right you can push the stick, to the left, up, down.
there is no way to use these on a computer exacpt use analog+ mame with his instructions on how to hook one up. But then it will only work for 2 drivers in mame.

yeah and it sucks cause my gauntlet came with 8 ways and its supposed to have 49 ways =P
-
Gauntlet 1 and 2 use 8ways
the new gauntlets use 49ways.
In mame sinistar (williams) and the archrival/pigskin drivers are the only ones that use 49way.

yeah, i meant gauntlet dark legacy... although now im thinking about selling it. lol
-
I believe you can play any guantlets with 8way, I think there is a dip switch setting.
-
yeah i have it fully working, it just feels kinda weird if youve ever played it in the arcade with 49s. its kinda hard to aim your turbo attacks precisely
-
Well then, get a 49way from ebay :)

Thanks for the info. This has helped me out a lot.
