Title: Real 4ways or Joystick Restrictors?
Post by: GGKoul on February 06, 2004, 11:57:33 am
I'm looking at redoing my 4 ply control panel.

As I want to add 4 - 4ways joysticks to my control panel to play "Karate Champ".

So my question is:

Do I add a 2 - 8 to 4 way switch joysticks with 2 - 4ways only? (IE: Supers)
Or
Do I keep my 4 - 8 ways Competition joysticks and buy 4 way Joystick Restrictors?

Any thougths you have will be appreicated.  As I'm not sure which will be the ideal step-up.

I personally would go with (4) restricted 8-ways.
That will let you play 2-P double stick games like Smash TV; and, with strategic button placement, can get you a 3 or 4-P CP as well.
It's more costly, but I think the versatility is worth it.
Just make sure the other 3 guys shower before they come over to play.

Supers are not very good 4-way joysticks, not restricted, and not easy to swap.  (I wouldn't want to have to get under the panel, pop off an E-clip, catch/find it, flip over the actuator, and reinstall the E-clip and close the panel, just to switch from Twin Cobra to Karate Champ.

The Oscar restrictors are a good solution for this.

There is also the Prodigy from www.groovygamegear.com and the T-Stick Plus from www.ultimarc.com which can be switched from above the panel.

Or the Omni-Stik (www.groovygamegear.com) or the J-Stick or T-Stick or E-Stick from www.ultimarc.com.

Basically, it comes down to what kind of feel you like for 8-way and 4-way games. (and what kind of look you want for your panel.)

Comps and J-Sticks have a comparatively long throw, but J-Sticks have a softer spring.

The other sticks all have a shorter throw which is better for Pac-Man type games but maybe not as good for fighters.

FWIW.

I decided to get the T-Stik 8/4 ways from Ultimarc.

Now I have to redesign my control panel so I can fit 2 more joysticks on my 4 player panel.

As well, I want add 2 rotary joysticks....

Be careful, I can sense a Frankenpanel in your future.
