Title: Form follow function...I mean Fortnite
Post by: 1500points on August 14, 2018, 04:29:52 pm
A year ago the kids and I made an arcade styled shelf.
It has set mostly unused in back room just holding an atari computer and a Pi.

Recently the Fortnite thing has exploded around here so the youngest grandson wanted a console station.  The shelf worked out well.

Now the adults are onboard and building retro arcade console cabinets to hold xbox 1 and a Switch with an hdmi tv.
Funny how that works, the same folks who say they don’t have room in their houses for arcade machines....

Yeah, my nieces are all into Fortnite. They begged me to download it on my Switch for them to play. I tried it out a few times, it's not really for me. I still prefer PUBG, or the now defunct Radical Heights (<--- it was fun for the 80's-stylings).  Funny thing about Fortnite on the Switch, it makes the GPU work overtime. Much more than BOTW! An hour of play will make your Switch run pretty hot.

Cool shelf cab. Good for the kids I would say, having a dedicated gaming "station" that you can swap consoles in and out of is robust for having console options.

How are you handling the audio? Speakers? Headphone jack?

A couple of the boys like the headset plugged into controller.

The biggest issue is internet. They had to get a better router to handle the load.

The extended family gathers in our living room then “squads up” so they just talk in person.

There can be 4 switches and a couple xboxes running at a time in the living room.  Like old LAN gaming parties without the nerdiness?

OMG I keep hearing the radio hosts talk about fortnight. Then I read this post and I’m confused I don’t see any forts the kids built. So I google “what is fortnight” and it’s a video game!!! Hahahahaha!

It pulls in the minecraft generation with fort building. You have to ax trees building and metal structures to get materials.

Then those fort pieces help you climb up on ramps, block shooting, and gain high ground in battle.

That is probably the biggest strategy dynamic that makes the game exciting.

My son plays Fortnite all the time with his friends on the Xbox.  Makes me jealous - I wish I could have done that when I was his age.  I don't like the game at all but I understand the appeal.
