is this possible? my MAME cabinet is going to be using a standard PC/PC monitor setup with a IPAC for MAME controls. If i hacked a PSX pad and interfaced it to the controls, how would the video output to a PC monitor?

You have to buy a converter. Before you run a game, you have to load a cd for the converter each time. Don't know of any other way. Well, I do, but it was less than favorable. I bought a vga switch. The only thing I hooked up to it was the PS2. On my 19" monitor, the game took less 50% of the screen. Also, it was doubled. Like I was looking a two seperate images. It looked like steaming poo. It also reset my PS2, and then the PS2 wouldn't power on. Scared the crap out of me. Well I finally hooked it back up to a TV eventually and it worked fine.
I read on, I think it was liksang.com. That the PS2 doesn't nativley support VGA, that you have to load code into it, hence the CD. Which is a shame because my dreamcast looks awsome on the PC monitor.
Hope this helps. If you find an alternative, let me know (PM me even) because it would be great to find a way.

so its easier to do with a DC? thats the main system i want converted anyway for the fighting games

Dreamcast has native VGA support (the "vga box" for dreamcast just activates the correct jumper pins to output VGA). The PS2 does not natively support VGA. There are some PS2 games which support 480p (same as 640x480)...but its only a few recent titles.
If you really want to view a PS2 on a VGA monitor, you would have to buy a hardware upscanner. Good ones (RGB Upscanners) cost around $250. Cheap ones (like found on ebay) cost about $40 (and look like crap...but they do work).

hmm well this just gives me an excuse to have a 3rd cabinet... =P
Gauntlet Dark Legacy JAMMA
Robocop -> MAME conversion - using PC and PC monitor
??? -> a few consoles and a TV
