Robotron is a 2D multi-directional shooter game in which the player controls the on-screen protagonist from a top-down perspective. The game is set in the year 2084 in a fictional world where robots ("Robotrons") have taken control of the world and eradicated most of the human race. The main protagonist is a nameless superhuman attempting to save the last human family.
The game uses a two-joystick control scheme; the left joystick controls the on-screen character's movement, while the right controls the direction the character's weapon fires. Both joysticks allow for an input direction in one of eight ways. Each level, referred to as a "wave", is a single screen populated with a large number of various enemy robots and obstacles; types include invincible giants to robots that continually manufacture other robots that shoot the protagonist. Coming into contact with an enemy, projectile, or obstacle costs the player one life, but extra lives can be earned at certain point totals. Waves also include human family members who can be rescued to score additional points, but certain robots can either kill them or turn them into enemies. Destroying all vulnerable robots allows the player to progress to the next wave; the cycle continues until all reserve lives are lost.

Holy crap! What a coincidence. I just finished installing my Dominux 8 sticks into my Multi-Williams this weekend (video coming soon, I'm editing as we speak).

Whelp I got 217,350 and then realized I had the difficulty set to 5 instead of 3. I had mine set to the official Aurcade.com settings.
My top score is 400k at those settings so this should be interesting...
I posted the pic below anyway (even though it was set to harder). (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/2ae1764bfd28bf89e00b80bccd21fcd5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/83039cb6178f89eaf8e3c4d461a245c5.jpg)

I don’t think that’ll ever happen. I can’t marathon games, and the Robotron world record is like a 30 hour affair.
2 hours straight is the longest I’ve gone.

Amazing score! I only wish I could play that good! :applaud:
I did see Mike Sao Pedro post a 9,999,975 score when I was at John's basement a couple of summers ago. It was amazing to see him play and get that exact score so it would save that way in the high score table (before it flipped).

Aww I was hoping to see a score from you. Being a Robotron aficionado now, I would expect you’d have some skills you've picked up from the pros. ;)

How is it that your score is not listed in the daily top 10 score? I only see it on the "all time" list. When did you shake off those cobwebs? :dunno

I didn’t get to snap a picture when I put it up. I only had a small window to play while waiting for the wife to get ready to go out (I actually had to let my lives run out so we could leave). Had to powered down the machine but took a picture the next morning.

git gud nub! j/k
Tank levels are tough, but try to stay away from the walls because of the bounce shots and try to stay close to them as they spawn so their shots are slower and easier to dodge. You gotta be aggressive on those stages, get right up in their grill, and be sure to switch your targeting to the first tanks that get spawned. When a tank is spawned they wait between 1-2 seconds to fire a shot, so you have a chance to kill 'em before they shoot at you. If you can keep on top of their spawning as best you can, you can get through the level easier. But definitely stay away from the walls! (or at least be mindful if you dodge a bounce shot, that it'll come back to you from behind!)
Try to maximize your score on the brain waves. The first time you get the brain wave, 95% of the time they're all going to chase after the one Mikey. If you can keep Mikey alive, you will only have to deal with their shots and the grunts for a good portion of the time. Once Mikey dies, they all chase after the closest family member they can find. That's when ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- hits the fan and it becomes a chase scenario, something you never want to get into in Robotron.
Try to clear the area around Mikey, while dodging the grunts and bullets being fired by the Brains. Concentrate on killing all the brains first, then grunts, then spheroids/enforcers. I like to leave one or two enforcers to the end and just collect the rest of the family members.
Remember, Enforcers shots can be manipulated by you! They actually try to either shoot directly at you, or in your path. You can use this to your advantage by "faking them out" in one direction, or stuttering your movement. Also, like the tanks, the further away you are from an Enforcer the faster their shots will be. Leaving a single Enforcer to kill at the end is the best way of giving you some breathing time to go around and collect the rest of the Family members.
For most levels, punching out early and circling around works for the initial start, but once Enforcers start spawning you'll want to try switching your direction up.
Other than these tips, I'm not sure what else to say other than practice makes perfect.
-
Any tips to share? For me, my tough level is those stupid tanks.
DeL
I've stated in past, but still the best and fastest way to learn the tanks is to play dodge ball with 1 until it runs out of its 20 bullets. Go to wave 7 with lots of starting lives and then don't shoot back at that last tank.
Vid Kidz intentionally mess with your fight or flight reactions and those bouncing tank bullets are perfect example. When a bullet is going along, the tendency is to run away from it in the same direction it is traveling, so the bounce will get you frequently.
But if you can learn to be counter-intuitive to your instincts, you'll learn to run in the direction of the bullet to cut across it's path. let's say it is angling to the left side of the screen, if you cross it going toward the right side of the screen you'll be completely away from its bounce. Takes training the brain to do that.

Any thoughts on monitor size? I'm playing this in my Total Carnage cabinet with a 25" monitor. I'm starting to think it might be easier to play on a smaller monitor where I could see the whole play field.

I built 5 or so of those. The dimensions are all written out at the WDPU FB group's files section. Maybe I'll post them on a thread here.
The profile can be obtained by purchasing the stencils from gamestencils. It is a very close approximation of that upper section of the profile which is difficult to freehand.

Thanks. I have most of the parts for my Stargate cabaret build and am just waiting for the weather to cooperate so I can start making sawdust. but now I'm starting to wonder if I should build a Robotron at the same time...
These are the plans I'm working off of. I'll see if I can find the dimensions you posted in the Facebook group as well.

the stargate mini is still on the floor in Ottumwa at the Old School arcade in the mall, so you are free to come down and take any pictures or measurements. The local vinyl shop down the street from me can print out the bezel, marquee, and cpo if you need, they are reasonable and built up really nice art for me when I was doing the projects.

I have never played it before, except for testing if it works, but still I wouldn't even think of playing something that requires diagonals using a keyboard. You even up the ante by trying to play a game that uses two control devices, so you even have to do the diagonals with the weak hand, too :o
Just smuggle a gamepad to work, it is worth the risk ;D Also, it'll do wonders for your blood pressure ;)
-
Not my best, but pretty close. One day maybe I'll finally break a million :D
When I was a kid I'd watch the older kids play this, but only ever put a quarter or two in it myself because it is just so relentless for beginners. You can lose all three lives in like 10 seconds if you aren't careful. Not a good investment for a kid with $2 in quarters and 90 minutes to spend in the arcade.
I still absolutely SUCK at Defender/Stargate. Just can't get the hang of either.

Opt2not needs a handicap set to at least diff 8 for his entry, probably diff 10.
Jarvis says the only way to play Robo is diff 10 (once you have the wave 40-60 thing down on defaults)
I bet we can get opt2not up to master status in this competition if he can beat wave 40 on diff 10. That would exciting.

Turned out to be a good run so I kept going till I got tired and petered out around 2:30am. Had to let it go ‘cause I’d be a zombie this morning if I kept at it. Well what else is new though, I’m usually a night owl type anyway, but really by that point I was making some dumb mistakes.

Yeah the fatigue is real, I start making dumb mistakes too. I can only do a couple games per session now and my first games are usually my best. The enemy timing is so much different at upper levels that a restart really jacks up your rhythm.

One thing that worries me is I was hearing a high-pitch whine coming from the back of my cabinet while I was playing. We recently moved, so I'm worried that something got jarred during transport. The machine was playing fine for that run, but I have concerns that it might be on it's way to breaking down.
The high-pitch whine could be coming from my monitor (hopefully not!), but it might also be from the PSU. I'm still running the original linear unit that I've repaired a couple times before. Might be time to convert to a high quality switcher. :-\

Probably the flyback on the monitor, my Joust does that. There's an article on Bob Roberts about it, he says you can sometimes shove a toothpick in to stop it, I'm just replacing. http://www.therealbobroberts.net/whiny.html (http://www.therealbobroberts.net/whiny.html)

Congrats to all! I can't seem to break 500k yet. :dizzy:
Suggestion for next game: Perhaps stick to the Williams theme and choose Bubbles. :-)

Suggestion for next game:
Any game with STANDARD controls.

Thanks, you too! Is that your all time high? My personal goal is to break 10 mil, no interest in marathoning, too old for that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. :lol
-
I really wanted to break the 250K, just ran out of time due to health stuff. Still, was fun. That 150K game, I died twice due to being blind/stupid, so if the goal of this competition is also for us to revisit these oldies and re-ignite the flame, well job well done here.

My all-time is just over 12 million, but the last time I played for more than 2 hours I got over the 7 million mark (https://youtu.be/SvX8BA1Hcag)and called it quits. That was really the last time I'd prefer to go that long. These days I regularly play till 2 million then give up.
Thanks again yamatetsu, for picking this game!

De nada. I have never been in an arcade, so I don't have any favorites. You happened to want to do an excellent game and had the right timing ;)
I didn't like this when I tested it, now I'm in a love-hate relationship. So I don't know whether I should thank you for choosing it or just punch you :) I've been yelling a lot at the screen, but finally making a little bit further is really rewarding.

Yep, that was the goal of the original competetion and the reason for the reboot. Seem to work so far :)

Can't get a new comp posted tonight, but will tomorrow.
