Hey everyone, we are starting again with a clean slate! All that was old is new again, all games are fair...game. So if you are a long time veteran, or you just got your shiny new 4player cab all done, complete with angled joysticks, and every control known to man, all i can say is - https://youtu.be/sUU5rMgSj_I?t=36s (https://youtu.be/sUU5rMgSj_I?t=36s)
The difference between this year's contest and previous years, is that there will not be an ongoing points series, rather stand-alone two week contests.
We will stick to the same general rules, which are:
- One credit, no continues/save states/autofire/hacks etc.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members
- Even if you don't *think* you have a competitive score, post it anyway to keep the thread fun & provide a good sense of score ranges.
- Only post scores that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Some pausing is ok (after all, as someone else posted, many of us have kids/jobs/etc that require our focus)
What shall we begin with? How about...Burgertime!
--------------------------------
Game Name : Burgertime :: Data East - 1982
ROM Name = btime
--------------------------------
Game Settings:
LIVES: 3
DIFFICULTY: NORMAL
BONUS LIFE: 20,000
ENEMIES: 4
END OF LEVEL PEPPER: YES
CROSS HATCH PATTERN: OFF (no idea what this means)
Controls:
4-way joystick, 1 button (pepper)
From Arcade Museum:
The object of the game is for Peter Pepper to assemble four giant burgers without colliding with any pursuing hot dogs, eggs or pickles who appear in later stages. Peter Pepper has to climb up ladders and walk across ramps to get to each of the burger fixings which include buns, beef patties, lettuce leaves and sometimes tomato slices and cheese slices.
Peter Pepper has to walk across each of the burger fixings, so they will fall downward to the each of the lower ramps until they reach each of the plates below at the bottom of the screen. He must assemble all four burgers to advance to the next stage. As the hot dogs, eggs and pickles pursue him, he can stop them three different ways. He can throw a pinch of pepper on them to stun them and make them temporarily harmless, but his pinches of pepper are limited, so he will have to use it wisely. Additional pinches of pepper can be gained by getting bonus items the will occasionally appear on the screen temporarily including ice cream cones, french fries and cups of coffee.
Another way Peter Pepper can stop his pursuers is by crushing them with one of the burger fixings. He does this by dropping it onto them whenever they walk under it. The third way to stop them is by dropping them on one of the burger fixings whenever they walk onto it, this will also allow each of the burger fixings to fall two, three or four floors more depending on how many of them are on it. However the pursuers are put out of action, they will continue to walk around in each stage until all the burgers have been completely assembled.

The contest ends on Sunday January 14, at midnight, PST.
Enjoy, and happy gaming!

Ok that doesn't have to actually be the title.
ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! Now playing: Burgertime
My subtle hint for you to put the name of the game into the topic title :)
-
Finally. A game that is on my MAME machine. Game on!
-
Outstanding! Glad to see you are rebooting the contest. This makes a lot of sense. :applaud:

4+ years of tradition. Gone. Like quarters in the rain.

I always pick up quarters, no matter the weather.
But really, but if hardly anyone is playing, it'd be better to reboot, rather than fizzle out.

I agree. You guys were picking some crappy ass games there for a while. Let's get back to some of the classics.

I found that a few of the games were some real gems (Hopping Mappy, for me), but yes, most of them felt like doing chores. And kept me from spending that time playing games that I enjoyed.
-
Yes, yes, let's rehash the same 20 games over and over. That'll never get old.

New system is worth a shot, let's see how it goes.

Agreed. While it was fun to discover some rare gems I wasn't participating when the classics were on the table. Hopefully this will generate more interest.
-
I missed the first round of most of the classics. So... I look forward to participating in this.

Yeah, I think we were at the bottom of the barrel. I haven't been around much but now I have a reason to be.

I haven't achieved a score worth posting yet but am steadily improving. One thing I've noticed is the game doesn't play very well with the the U360 on my MAME cabinet. I play Burgertime a lot in the wild on a dedicated machine and much prefer the original joystick.

Yikes. This game's controls are finicky even WITH a 4-way. I couldn't imagine the pain of playing on an 8-way.

Let's say I was very close to smashing a gamepad over this. I have played this with two different gamepads, both in analog and digital mode, with a keyboard and on my 8-way cab. The controls suck. I draw the line if I have more difficulties wrestling the controls than playing the game. I have yet to complete a game in which I don't die because I couldn't get on/off a ladder or simply stop moving because I didn't press exactly in one of the directions.
-
So far the best I got is 9950 and I dislike the pickles on the third level.

My frustrations with controls is usually connected to the location of Peter Pepper getting off the ladder. I have a 4-way, so it's not that, it's because if you're not in just the exact right spot, it doesn't let you on/off.
I still get in a hurry and mess that up, even with the joystick.

Close. I screwed up the side art a bit. The control panel is temporary. I am going to put in a Burgertime panel. At one time I thought I wanted a trackball and three buttons. I also need a new grill for the speaker.

I want to strip the vinyl off this summer and stencil it properly. I will also put actual t molding on it instead of the stick on stuff. That along with the correct control panel will make me happy with the machine.
-
No.
Noooo.....
-
You know how it goes PBJ. The cab is playable now. What are the chances I actually get around to changing it? ;D

Fear me!

That's some nice low-key smack-talking right there. :lol :lol
Well, back to work with my pittance of points! :lol

Actually just put away the tree and dragged my classic cabinet back into the den today....
Last place checking in.

First time I have entered one of these... I have never played BTIME much, but I like it.. my score sucks though... I am playing with a keyboard currently, so I'm hoping that's holding me back.

I had a free moment at work, I'm up over 10,000... man, I gotta get a joystick setup for this quick, my Haruman kit will be in tomorrow.
-
For those with joystick complaints...
Most joysticks are 4/8-way convertible. However, just because you rotate the restrictor plate to 4-way, doesn't necessarily mean it's actually 4-way. You may have to bend the switch levers slightly away from the actuator so two switches are not engaged at once. I had to do this with my JLW in my ZD-Invader for this game. Yes, you have to be standing in the right spot to get on/off a ladder, but it's not all that hard to pull off with a properly adjusted joystick.
Hope this helps some of you...
-
14100... starting to pick it up now...
-
Might as well join in and hope for a top 10!

I think the important thing to take away from the videos is that you may want to use peppers offensively to bunch bad guys. Someone could take the lead right now and only have to complete 2 screens.
-
Totally agree and totally get why people would play it that way. Just not for me. For sure doing so, I'd progress in score (granted that's the point) but it's not my style of progression. I'm not taking anything away from Burgertime by saying that, it's still a great game in my eyes.
used to love playing the colecovision version. I'll have to google to see if this trapping trick existed on that version too.
-
I know it is no record braking score, but 12600 is a personal best.
-
Luring the eaties onto burger parts and running away is the scoring factor in the game.
-
Gave the game a second chance using a keyboard. Figured out how to herd the enemies, giving them a ride on the burger ingedredients is a good way to score. Got to 4th level. Now that I know what I' doing, the game is not so bad, but I still die because of the controls/the precision involved. I just love fleeing down a ladder, trying to get off, being a pixel too high and frantically hammering the keyboard.
45,800.

I agree, Yama. That Btime takes some getting used to before it gets good. I hated it at first, and only played it because my sister loved it. But it's like a fungus, it grows on you.
Wish I had more time to play this week, though. And I suppose kixfan isn't going to smack us all down, haha. Not like we don't all know he's got mad skillz.

Welp, that's the game! Unless a better idea is had, we can keep with the 3rd place scorer choosing the next game.
So you're up, Yama!

Since acvieluf doesn't want you to know how the competition went scorewise, I shall foil his evil plan.
The final scores.

Mr. opt2not expressed his desire to demonstrate his aptitude in playing his favorite game, I shall grant his wish.
The next game will be Robotron 2084 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156318.0.html).

Do we get a 10x score multiplier?

Build one this week, play the game next week ;D
Or use a PC and a gamepad. My 2 stick cab is out of order, so I'm going to use an XBox 360 controller and my PC.
