My monitor has died on me, and I'd like to fix it. It's been working fine until the other day. Here is what happened:
I had the monitor powered on for several days (I didn't realize that it was on). It was showing a black screen for that time because a screen saver had kicked in. I was far away in a another room when I suddenly heard a really loud screaming sound. The monitor was making a somewhat high-pitched sound that sounded to me like electrical sparks. I unplugged everything and it stopped. I took the monitor out of my cabinet and turned out the lights so I could SEE what was happening, but when I powered it on again nothing happened - no video and no sounds. I checked the fuse, and it is blown.
There was a pretty strong smell (?) that didn't leave the apartment for a few days.
It's probably a bad idea, but my first idea would be to replace the fuse so I can watch and see where the sparks are flying.
Any recommendations on how I should go about finding out what the problem is so I can fix it?
Thanks in advance,
Jake

It sounds exactly like the flyback blew out. Zanen Electronics sells them for around 26 bucks (phone 1-806-829-2780). You may also have a bad horizontal output transistor and/or capacitor C36 (critical safety cap). Those are all common failure items Bob Roberts stocks all those parts.

Great, thanks. I will replace them and see what happens.

bob roberts also has flybacks--$21.00. If you are unsure of your HOT I have 2 here that we could compare readings on.
Just out of curiosity did you pop another fuse in to see what happened? I have a chassis here that pops fuses and with the help of ken, the only thing that I haven't replaced is the flyback--wondered if you would get the same results (i.e. popping fuses)
