Title: Need a inexspesive 10 inch LCD for a R-pi project.
Post by: Locke141 on December 03, 2017, 08:13:42 am
Hi guys,

I have been planing a little table top in a wine crate. Was just given a nice crate but it’s smaller then planed and won’t fit the 15inch LCD with room for controls. I like the box so much that I want to try an make it work.

Ideally I would like to have an 10 inch 3:4 monitor but 16:9 will do. This will ether be a 60-in-1 build or an R-pi build.

Why is it so often that people set a budget to guarantee that they will produce garbage? You may as well not take on the project.

I bought a 12" tft monitor the other day for $49.82 for a project ( $55.35 - 10% Pholiday10 discount) but it's sold out already. But you might be able to find something similar on Ebay. It's only an 800x600 res but that was fine for what I needed it for.

Another option would be a DVD player that has AV in like this one ( at least it says it has AV in and Out but you would need to verify !  -

Spend $100, get the Eyoyo.  Worth it.

Has HDMI, built in speakers, and a USB port that can power your pi.  I've built two bartops with it already.

Thrift stores have cute little 13” crt’s all the time. The savers near me had two matching 13” sharp units the other day for $5 each. It’s authentic, and going in a barrel. Think about it.

I have two 13" TVs I've been tripping over for 2 years in search of a project.  Pi via composite actually looks good on them.  Show us the way, Locke....

That monitor looks super blurry. Pass!

That's just the focus on the camera, it's on the balltop.  It's actually quite sharp.

This should work.

Mike A, in the words of a BYOAC member, I often set out to make "something interesting that doesn't suck". Some times you ask for ideas or suggestions on something you don't know is even possible. Just looking for outside perspective and ideas.

In this case I'm looking to make a table top cocktail cabinet, into a wood wine box, the kind fancy wines come in. This is intended for a family member who lives in a small New York City apartment and wants something that'll look nice on the shelf. I picked up a 15inch LCD for $6 at a thrift shop and was given a very nice 3 bottle box that's just to small. I could get a 4 bottle wine box that will fit my 15inch LCD as originally planned, or get a smaller monitor. I like the smaller box so will keep my eyes out for a 13inch monitor, but am also picking up a larger box tomorrow for the 15 inch monitor.

HaRuMaN, I may use that for the vice small box.

Got a larger wine box.

Also received a 60-in-1 board I ordered today. I may go with it for this build instead of a R-pi.

Going to start a build tread for this one.

Driverman?   Which one?

a) the guy that liked 720 and wanted the mamedevs to fix the controller issue (was there one?)
b) the nut from NZ that got nailed for hacking, and causing grief on this site?
c) the person who was making a front end by using endless pointless batch files?
d) the kid with mommy issues that built a pedestal with angled joysticks? (he was called kanada right?)
e) the cool dude that is building an aquarium arcade out of an asteroids cabinet (or trying to) and is not called driverman?

Hmmm.  I think it is time you started a project Lew, you know the ones that turn out really cool....  You sound bored, man.   :lol

Have you considered basing your project around a cheap bay-trail tablet?

Until fairly recently the bay-trail platform was plagued by processor bugs (which Intel didn't show much interest in fixing), and poor Linux support. There have also been Windows driver issues which means that most of them came shipped with a 32bit version of Windows 10 and a 32bit bootloader, even though the processor supports 64 bit. Because of this, they can be bought really cheaply at the moment.

However, the good news is that almost all of the the linux issues have now been fixed by a guy called Ian Morrison (Linuxium). I'm running Ubuntu on my baytrail tablet with his patches applied, and everything works great apart from the accelerometer, which is hardly a deal-breaker. I'm seriously considering putting Retropie on it, and using it as a poor man's switch.

Thats cool, but for this build I'm going to stick with 60-in-1 or R-pi.

I need to play with the 60-in-1 to see if it is expectable.

Woah, this was the equivalent of Spider’s “Why don’t you go Eff yourself, Tommy?” speech in Goodfellas. If I had some cash in hand, I’d throw it on the table and tell you “Good for you, Fishboy, don’t take no crap from no one!”

At least no vector monitors were abandoned in the rain, during this playful banter.  ;)
