Title: Coop games like Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: leapinlew on December 03, 2017, 07:12:01 am
My daughter and I just finished Donkey Kong Country Returns. We had a lot of fun. She's real young, so she enjoyed "playing". If you never played Coop Donkey Kong Country Returns, there are 2 players, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. She played Diddy Kong and could climb on Donkey Kongs back. I would do all the moving and she could shoot. So, I was able to navigate the tough jumps and climbs and she could do her part.

It was a good combo for us and we had lots of fun. Is anyone aware of other games we can play that are similar to that kind of coop gameplay?

I belive mario galaxy games have a mechanic where player 2 just does extra stuff while you play as mario. That should work. Also mario oddysey p2 plays as the hat. Then theres dkc tropical freeze. That luigi game on wii u would be good too since player 2 is like immortal.

Sonic 2 also.

But both are terrible in 2 player co op lol

Knuckles chaotix is better.

Knuckles chaotix is better.

Said no one ever.

I think Sonic 2/3 is the better bet with P2 helping without impeding progress.

Sonic 2/3 are better games, but the co op was terrible.

Atleast chaotix co op worked well.

Some good suggestions. Definitely will get Tropic Freeze. Didn't realize there was another one out.

How well does it work with a kid who's "real young" ?

Child of Light.  Second player participates but does not impede.

IIRC, a couple of the Mario games on WiiU are similar.  Perhaps Mario Maker and the 2D game?

Beets me I never tried with one who is “real young”

As daft as this may sound the only game I have ever played co op with a kid was DOOM (the original one).

I controlled Doom Guy and the kid did the shooting lol

They enjoyed it loads.

We are totally loving Super Mario Galaxy 2 - playing with my kids as player 2.

Awesome suggestion. I'll check out Odyssey next.

Yeah, Mario Galaxy games are solid for 2nd player as a helper.

I think the GC mario kart game had a coop mode. Mario Kart Double dash. Player 1 drove and player two would toss out weapons.

New super mario bros is a good coop with kids as long as they are cool with repeatedly dying. Any player can just play and die, and they end up in a bubble, allowing you to keep going or pop their bubble to get them playing again.

Lego games are good with kids 4+, you sometimes need to swap characters or reign them in to simultaneously pull a lever with you, but they can pretty much do their thing and it won't slow you down.

If you want to go way back, Bruce Lee was a great helper game. P2 can be the fat green sumo guy and help you beat up the ninja. THere are a number of screens that didn't include the sumo or ninja but that never bothered my kids. They just liked having a character they could control, and it never impeded the progress of P1.

And honestly, my kids love watching me play RPGs. They participate by helping me pick my party, make decisions, spot treasure chests. SUrprising how much they get into it as a group activity.
