How do I step a pc 5V supply down to 3V?  thanks.

you can always use a resistor to drop volatge or a zener diode to give you exactly 3V problem with these solutions are they get very hot if you have a big load on the other end

Thanks!--I should have mentioned that I was driving 1 amplified speaker--you know the el-cheapo kind that plug into each other and then into the pc.  I wonder if i could just run it at 5v--do you think it would get too hot?

String a bunch of diodes in series with the 5volt supply, each one will drop it down a bit.  I think I tried this a few days ago and saw 0.3volts dropped for each diode I added, so if you string 6 or 7 general purpose diodes in series you may get 3volts out.
