I was working on a cabinet made of scaffolding wood, but I am not quite happy with it actually. So I am considering a totally new design. I really dislike the angular design and rather go for something curvy. I like the Galaga/Ms Pacman style and I also appreciate this one: http://www.arcadewinkel.nl/arcadekasten-sets/bouwpakketten/medium-arcade-flatpack-melamine-wit (http://www.arcadewinkel.nl/arcadekasten-sets/bouwpakketten/medium-arcade-flatpack-melamine-wit)
I will be using a 21" LCD so there is no need for it to be too deep. The cabinet will be in the living room and shouldn't take up too much space, so I am looking for a slim design. But... I think I like a rather large (deep) CP, as you can rest your wrists on it. This skinny Galaga is a nice one, but has a really small CP: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71458.0.html. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71458.0.html.) I am also not too sure if I want my monitor tilted and how much.
Can you guys help me with some inspiration on a design? Maybe even with some plans?
-
So you want something like this?

That takes up too much space unfortunately...

Skinny cab with a deep CP is going to be the same thing.
Search for “Woody cabinet” or “Kisscade”. Those might be a good starting point.
-
How is that Woody curvy? And unfortunately I can't find that Kisscade (neither on Knievel's site nor on this forum (with working images)).

I said it was a starting point, Lester. You wanted skinny, now take the idea and round it off the edges. FFS, doesn’t anyone want to try anything for themselves anymore??

I have many friends. I have no patience for people who don’t want to research or want everything handed to them.
Sorry for offering advice in your thread. I’ll show my way out. Have fun with your skinny little arcade thingie with the gigantic control panel.

I am quite sure no-one likes you in real-life either.
Mocking people all the time, while you never made anything good yourself. Arrogant ---tallywhacker---.
-
Oh yeah only four or five of the best builds on the site....
-
Still an arrogant ---tallywhacker---, no?
-
But when you're done being a --cream-filled twinkie-- to one of the sites best posters you should check out Taitorama, yametsu's pinup build, and dannygalagas most recent build. The last two aren't exactly slim but they have curves you might like.
-
:laugh2: best posters, or most arrogant posters who only post memes? I don't get why that ass wasn't banned already. But I might check out that stuff.

Only sad memes...
-
Again, I'll see my way out and leave you to your Slim Jim project. But I couldn’t pass up the chance to post Donald. Best meme ever.

I will see your arrogance again somewhere else on this forum!

I think you two may have got off on the wrong foot. Barry, for what it's worth, you sounded pretty harsh in your "how is that curvy??" comment. At least, that's how I read it.
As it's written, your requests seems to be a contradictory. It seems to me, the one you found here:
http://www.arcadewinkel.nl/arcadekasten-sets/bouwpakketten/medium-arcade-flatpack-melamine-wit (http://www.arcadewinkel.nl/arcadekasten-sets/bouwpakketten/medium-arcade-flatpack-melamine-wit)
Is going to be a pretty good to accomplish deep control panel and curvy design. What don't you like about it?
Also, have you checked out the pedestal builds?
Lastly, I find the Galaga control panel to be deep enough for my gaming sessions. I have a converted golden tee, which has a real deep control panel and I really like it too, but for me, the wrist rest isn't as critical as I thought it was.
-
I think the first toy in this thread will get more plays than those other two.

Yeah, I kinda like that kit, but I think the curve on the side is too big. It's a bit to "spacy" to my liking. And the thing is: I rather have plans so I don't screw up one or more sheets of MDF. And of course I can make changes to soms plans (for instance the Galaga ones), but will making the CP deeper and tilting the screen less break the design totally? That is actually my main concern. So I rather see a design totally to my liking (or even plans), so I don't screw up again (like I did with my first build which I just don't like).
A pedestal is really not what I'm looking for. I really want it to be a cabinet.
-
Hi chap. I did a curvy cab around 8 years ago. Probably not a design I’d personally use again - it was my only dabble with lcds and wasn’t happy with the results but might give you some ideas.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=92156.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=92156.0)

??? I really don't get the pissing and moaning at the people who didn't give you an exact cabinet you are looking for. You should have just been clear you are looking for someone else's exact design to copy. If you are worried about wasting MDF because of the requirement to create something for yourself, then you should spend a little more time on the fundamentals. Maybe post up your ideas to make sure you are on the right track.

I like the curves of brlove's Marvel Cab (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137394.msg1417153.html#msg1417153). It's a slim design, allows for a deep cp, and has beautiful curves.
There are no plans for it, but it shouldn't be too hard to replicate.

Just do a life-size cardboard mockup, that will give you a pretty good idea of how the cab is going to look like.

This is a beautiful cab and definitely checks all the angry little boxes of the OP. I've never seen it before, thanks for posting.
-

Those are not emojis, they are art. Just joking. For a while I was looking into what I could do using thin sheet metal and metal shears. All these shapes are cut out by hand, even the tiny eyes and teeth. I spraypainted them and glued them together. Just something I did while being extremely bored.

Just make sure you plan ahead as other suggested on cardboard, or you may end up with something like this... (MAME Defender pic below).
Also, let's try to keep it friendly here guys. If you guys want to jab at each other do it in PMs. Not here.
And for the record Yots has been building here for years and has some great advice. You guys definitely got off on the wrong foot. He was just stating that it takes work to get a fully polished product. No one can do the work for you.
Here are some samples you can work from:

Thanks! I guess I will continue with the Galaga design, but slim that down, something like: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71458.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,71458.0.html)
I will try to tilt the screen more than in that topic (all the way back), but of course (a bit) less than in the original cab. The control panel will be a bit deeper than in that Skinny topic, but not like a "Franken-panel". Just 2x 6 buttons. Service buttons will be on the front (as well as a coin door). I guess the screen/CP could become something like this then:

Haha, Yeah, surprised with this as your selection. Not that Spacies' cab is lacking, just not "curvy" or a cab style that seems to be begging for a deeper control panel.
I guess when someone says curvy, my mind goes here:
-
Or this.
-
Remember guys... this guys wife has to approve the design. Give him a break. :laugh2:
-
Haha, yeah my wife has to approve eventually ;) At least if it goes downstairs to the living room or not.
And I just don't like the bulky cabinets with a lot or 90 degrees corners and big CPs and marquees. That's why I referenced the Galaga cabinet. CP inside, quite fluent lines and some curves, instead of the pronounced corners.
I guess I will make the top a bit more curved down and I really like the screen more deep and tilted. Also that way I could probably put the speakers above the screen.
-
It just sounds like to me... that you already have an idea in your head. Now you just have to put those thoughts down on paper. Sketch it out!

I took a shot:

(https://image.ibb.co/gz5wyR/Slim3.jpg) (https://image.ibb.co/fPT5sm/Slim4.jpg)
So basically a slim Galaga with a bit more curve at the top, a deeper (220 mm - 8.7 inch) an wider (650 mm - 25.6 inch) CP and a less tilted (LCD) screen. I am not the tallest, so I might lower the base a bit (now 940mm - 37 inch). Any comments or suggestions?
-
Looks good. Are you going to go with a 4:3 LCD?
-
Looks good. Are you going to go with a 4:3 LCD?
Thanks. Yes a 20.1 inch 4:3 Dell 2001FP. I tried it tilted and it's still visible very well. Also the screen is quite bright, so I will probably cover it with tinted glass.
-
Good choice. I'd do that too. It's got great angles and you'll be happy with it.
-
Those lines look good. Its slim, but not so slim that it doesn't look like an arcade machine.
-
Metal CP or GTFO.

How about a rounded off marquee kinda like those bad dudes cabinets?

A slight bend might be nice. Very slight though.
I really don't know what to do with the finish anyway. I think flashy side art is cool, but not in a living room. And I don't have room in the rest of the house (except the attic where I'm working on it). So, I guess something subtle like one color tone (t-molding, buttons/sticks, maybe some lines) and the rest black and RAL9010 to blend in our IKEA household (WAF is stretched a lot already). But still no idea for the marquee. Will figure that out along the way.
-
That Bad Dudes cabinet is one of my all-time favorites. Loved the game too BITD.
Markc74's "The Invaders" cabinet isn't exactly "curvy" but it checks the IKEA box and looks fantastic.

Metal is king. All hail the king!
...
The way I look at this hobby is like this... We all became attracted to it based on the games we played as children. But we all come out of it with a skill set we didn't have prior. Might as well hone some skills in the metal working department while you're working with all this wood, paint, electronics, and art...
-
I agree that metal would be best from that image, at least if you are going for that sharp on an angle where the cp cuts inward. It could just take more abuse.

I agree on that totally! But apart from that are there any benefits to metal? I would think it feels cold and looks kinda trashy? And I don't think this cabinet will get too many beatings anyway :)

That one is so nice. Still it's too "present" I guess. But I will (eventually) consider something like this. Especially the lineage.

That makes more sense. Sorry. I shouldn't come out swinging like that. I just got to work. I need coffee. He was actually referring to Yotsuya.
-
Nope, he wasn't referring to yots. He called yotsuya basically an arrogant poster of memes, some time later you made your post, to which he answered "Ah, the other arrogant sucker from this forum. Cute. I am just waiting for the last obvious one." So there has to be someone else. The plot thickens. But since revealing who "obvious arrogant sucker #3" is would undoubtedly end in a lively discussion that Saint would have to clean out of this thread, Barry shouldn't say anything more about this.

We’ve all moved on.

We grew up. ;)

Metal CP or GTFO.
Why metal?
Metal is king. All hail the king!
...
The way I look at this hobby is like this... We all became attracted to it based on the games we played as children. But we all come out of it with a skill set we didn't have prior. Might as well hone some skills in the metal working department while you're working with all this wood, paint, electronics, and art...
And credits to Vigo too ;D.... There is just no substitution for steel....Tooling up for it seems like a daunting task in a highly competitive expensive market however,Jennifer has multiple welders (*got the idea from the Flashdance girl back in the day) And more recently have bought a muti process machine and taught myself to TIG,.... and OMG, YES,YES, its highly, highly recommended to use steel, stainless, and aluminum in your builds.

I am still kind of upset that I am the number 2 arrogant guy. ;D
Second place is just first loser.

It’s good to be king baby!!
I have my suspicions who #3 is, but he’ll remain a mystery.
