I beat this back in the day, but decided to play a couple levels to test out the new Pi install... like 2 weeks later I finished it. I had to get my "Mario control" back and never was as sure footed as I was back in the day. The Chocolate Levels gave me fits and a couple of the ghost houses and castles almost caused me to throw the controllers across the room but being older, and paying my money for the controllers, gave me the wisdom and patience to push through.

Next up is the Donkey Kong Country games. I played it on the Wii, with my 6 year old, and we loved it. Hoping the SNES version is just as fun.
-
full clear or just "beat bowser" ?
-
Beat Bowser. He never saw it coming!
-
I always get stuck on like the 6th star world (in the middle part of the star , not the outside levels) , chocolate island is the hardest part of the game.
-
Lol good stuff

I had to get my "Mario control" back
I blamed the PI on having some lag when playing any Mario game, I loaded it up on the SNES classic and it ended up me just sucking at it now. I used to have the jump timing on point when I was younger.

My wife gives me tons of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- because I've never beaten Super Mario Brothers, but she's never played Super Mario World until we got the SNES Classic and she's terrible at it. I think I could beat half the levels blind folded, it's scary how much I played this game in the 90s.

Its still deserved ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- even if shes terrible lol

I've never beaten Super Mario Brothers
This place has really gone down hill. Do we not have any standards anymore? Is anyone allowed to join this forum?
I want a refund.

Meh, it gets boring around 4 worlds.
-
I gotta say though the controls on smb on the nes just arent as tight as super mario world on the Snes.
-
with warps you can beat the first SMB in like 15-20 minutes, same for SMW with star path warps and SMB3 with warp whistles :dunno

But i have a problem with having to 100% games. Really slows me down on rpgs.
-
I have the same problem, Ive been swimming around Skellige with Geralt collecting crates (full of useless ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---) for like 3 months just to 100% the map.

Yes, I've beaten them all like that. I haven't beaten the first Super Mario Bros by playing through all the levels, though.
You know those kids that had one system and like 3 games for it? So they got really, really good at playing the same game for months?
I was the exact opposite of that kid.

I may or may not have gotten through SMB running through then. I know I beat SMB 2,3, and SMW by beating all the levels. I love SMW but I had no idea how hacked together it was ( tcrf.net )
Im pretty sure I ran the gambit of the first back when it was the only game I had besides bases loaded and urban champion but now Im having doubts.

SMW has tons of replay value....
11 exit (shortest route to bowser through star world)
then play
96 exit (every level every exit)
then for goofs and giggles or if you are tired of playing...
0 exit credits warp with arbitrary code execution. Learn to do this. It's great for showing off to your friends cause it can be done in like 10 minutes by an average joe following sethbling's instructions. with practice you can beat SMW in under 2 minutes.

using a similar memory exploit / arbitrary code execution, you can "install" a hex editor into one of the save slots and directly control memory addresses within the game itself. (I have confirmed these memory exploits work with original hardware as well as in emulators)

I watched that 10 minute video and read his notes and still don't understand how exactly he's "injecting code" into the game. Is he really writing values into memory by carefully jumping Mario around the screen?
-
SMW is still (to this day) the best Mario game ever made. Super Mario Bros 3 was already a ground-breaking achievement and yet somehow Nintendo still outdid themselves with SMW.
The mechanics they built into this game were tremendously clever.
So clever, that I'm not even sure Nintendo knew what they had created.
Fast forward almost 25 years later and users are creating some of the most creative SMW levels ever in Super Mario Maker.
-
Best game on the SNES by a wide margin, IMO.

the game just happens to store the last known positions of sprites. (so when you go beyond and the sprite goes off the left edge of the screen...then go back it knows where it is/was)
when he eats a koopa he stands in a specific spot so when he spits it out, the last known position of the fireball as it goes off the screen is stored. those numeric values are used as "code" so when the game is "crashed" by eating the coin and collecting it at the same time (mario collects the coin on yoshi's tongue) ... which in turn changes the item on yoshi's tongue to the next sprite which is the chargin' chuck that is just off screen to the right. since yoshi isn't supposed to be able to eat a chargin' chuck... game crashes.
the game happens to crash to the area just before where the sprite position data is stored. so in a nutshell, the position numbers in memory are treated as data commands... one of which sets up the game to go to a particular gamemode number (the thank you screen) while the others are set as null data or a JMP command to exit back to the game instead of freeze. (if in the case of invalid data)

I loved SMW, but Super Mario Galaxy was a ton of fun also. Not sure which was my favorite.

I like LttP more but SMW is definitely the greatest launch title of all time.

In my opinion, this is the most perfect game ever made. Glad u jumped back in
