I'm resurrecting my mame machine and hooked up a more modern pc to it. (windows 10)
I have the trackball hooked up via usb to my pc. Is there software I need to make the trackball work?
Or any suggestions on why it wouldn't be working? The date on the trackball is from 2006 so that's how old it is.
Any suggestions on where to buy a newer one?
Thanks!

A USB trackball should show up in Windows as a USB HID Mouse device using the generic mouse driver -- no special software needed to make it work.

It could be your MAME configuration, but leave that for step three below.

Don't start looking for new hardware yet. :lol

- Step one is to identify your trackball and USB encoder. (post pics if possible)
- Step two is to verify that the trackball and USB encoder work in Windows. (it should be plug-and-play)
- Step three is to get it working in MAME.

Thank you Scott. Here are pics. It's a 3 inch trackball that's hooked up directly to a usb that goes to my pc which is running windows 10.
I turned the pc on and off and get no activity with the trackball. And of course it doesn't work inside of mame either.
The pics show it a little dismantled because a few years ago I bought new boards thinking it was just the boards that were messed up but neither set work.
I mean I have more money than time right now. If you think it's something simple I'll try it but I don't mind spending $80 to get a new trackball and boards.
Thanks again.
Gary
p.s. I'm using an ipac controller which you see in the picture.

That's a Happ trackball with a built-in optical (mouse) encoder.

It should be plug-and-play if you didn't fry something or wire it wrong.
I turned the pc on and off and get no activity with the trackball.
Does it show up as a mouse device in "control panel" -- "hardware and sound" -- "devices and printers"?
If not, have you checked USB 5v and ground with your multimeter?
PM sent regarding further troubleshooting.
