Title: Tempest-ish Spinner Project
Post by: 1500points on October 12, 2017, 06:49:08 pm
Got the Warlords finished to the point of waiting on art.  Was so impressed with the Turbo Twist 2 spinner tests I figured it would be a good time to build a Tempest-esque shell.

Gonna try a 15inch lcd mounted horizontally this time which makes the whole cab less than 17in wide.

I'm in Iowa so you get X amount of time in an unheated garage before it gets too cold.  :)

Going the distance!

Mounted horizontally? I did a Tempest Bartop with a 17" vertically mounted LCD. It was one of my favorites. I think it had a 15" width. Good luck with yours. Mine is in my signature if you want to see how I did the CP. That was the only real tricky part.

cool. i will check it out. thank you.  :)

i mostly wanted Atari Avalanche on it which is a horizontal game.
Tempest looks and plays adequately for my needs from it, and it is hard to predict what game I might run across in the future.  Always tinkering.

Finally had some time to tinker on the project-

It works.  Now to figure out the proper spinner settings.
Then see if stella will work properly with the turbo twist.

The 15in dell lcd is kinda tired and not super bright but it works well enough for this lil project.

I noticed major havoc has no sound in advance mame. Hmmm

Nice, what are measures otherwise ? Like height and depth.

37in tall, 18in deep at the point, 17in wide.
Surprisingly stable footprint.

Tilt the monitor, it looks weird like that.

Tilt the monitor, it looks weird like that.
I believe I have to agree on that. But is there enough room for it to tilt?

The monitor is weak enough that you have to be face on with it.

I did mount it with the dell stand so it can lean back some as needed

Spent some time playing Major Havoc with 70 for dial speed and 45 for sensitivity, seems pretty decent.
Tempest works with 70 speed, 15% sensitivity, because spinning it hard was making it act up at 20-45%.
In the dark garage the upright viewing angle was correct for seeing the colors best, think I'll jack up the video brightness to 11 in the config.txt and see what difference that makes.

Found the audio settings for MH, wow that game really has some cool effects.

Not sure I like how "tight" the TT2 spinner is, takes effort to use it and when you let go it stops immediately which makes Major Havoc kind of difficult and choppy.  Update- figured out it works much better without the aluminum inertia piece.

That’s a 15in lcd so not common to goodwill’s around here.  I have had probably 2 or 3 dozen project lcds and that is the only tiny one I have run across.

This is monitor at full tilt on the factory stand.

set the hdmi boost to 11 and cranked up the audio.
Here is where the project will likely sit until I figure out where to find an image of the Major Havoc art where someone isn't gouging for it online..

Found someone with custom Major Havoc art to share.
Also figured out how to get Stella going for Atari 2600 games. woot!

Finding myself gravitating to repeatedly playing Major Havoc in Mame and Super Breakout on Stella.

Dropped machine off to get Major Havoc artwork printed up.

Angles aren’t too bad from guessing on the fly using google on the smartphone.

70speed / 45 sensitivity is way faster than the real thing.  Will calibrate it in future and post settings.

I myself am only 2’ 8

Actually I loan games to the local arcade and there is a young lady in a wheel chair who appreciates the lower heights.  I loaned mini-rockola cab to them for a weekend event and it went over well for people sitting in chair or even children.

I have a tiny kaboom that is fun to play sitting on floor with kids. Even the 18mo olds stand and play it.

This cab is going to hook to a 55in tv on wall then we will put it on stand as needed.  Imagine having a friendly tournament using things like kaboom, omega race, tempest, kickman, arkanoid, or 2600 super breakout, etc from the controls.  Quite entertaining stuff pi allows.
