Title: Keep the 2-way restrictor alive
Post by: crashwg on January 30, 2004, 12:21:28 am
Oscarcontrols has run out of 2-way restrictors and are considering not getting more due to lack of demand.  Help me convice Kelsey that we need these and to get some more made.

you need two options for 'yes'..

a) Yes, because it is a good idea to have as many options as possible for the arcade/mame community, and tho' I may not need one now, I may in the future.

B) yes, (damnit - I meant to order one last week for my satans hollow, and forgot...!) I need it by next monday!

C) no.. who cares about silly games that only go in two directions.. I don't need one and never, ever will..

then you'll give Kelsey an honest poll..:-)

(I vote 'a'... if Bob Roberts and others don't stock it, keep a minimum supply around )

The problem is that the 2-way restrictor is only truly useful in a couple of circumstances (one of them being Defender and the other one being Stargate). I just don't see other 2-way games benefitting from the restrictor.

The reason it is helpful in Defender and Stargate is that it helps reinforce the fact that you only move your ship up and down with the stick and that thrust and reverse are buttons.

what about galaga?

what about galaga?

There is no natural inclination to push up or down in Galaga. Thus no need for the restrictor. I have played tons of Galaga, using 2-ways, 4-ways, and 8-ways and it is always the same.

But, in Defender, there is a strong inclination to push left and right on the stick in an attempt to make your ship go left and right. The first time I ever saw those restictors I thought of Defender.

Actually, there are a few other games that would benefit.

Asteroids (and other left-right-thrust games), if played with the joystick rather than buttons, then these games would benefit from the restrictor.

That Space Invaders clone where you control a missile cart, and the button is a thrust button.

I DO want a 2-way restrictor, but unfortunatley I use Wico sticks and not Happ ones, and thus can't use Oscars.

Is that due to some different bolt spacing or something?

You could always go with a omnistick from http://groovygamegear.com they are switchable to 2 way.

They can also do 3 way and 5 way and 4 way and 8 way.

Skinnier handle, shorter handle, and the way it moves are all different than the happ sticks. I looked carefully at Oscars restrictors and I don't think they would restrict a Wico at all.

I never thought of this, does anyone know if they will work with p360s?

You could also buy a replica Williams 2-way stick. Takes a lot less space too, so you can use the correct key placement for Defender and Stargate (or does the button fit in close enough with a Happs stick?). Unfortunately they cost a bundle (seen them for $49 and $59)

If it works with supers it will work with p360's.

I can totally see the use for a 4-way restricting plate, but I don't honestly see the need for a 2-way restricting plate. It seems like over-complicating the situation. If you want  a joystick to only go in 2 directions then all you should have to do is cut a horizontal channel instead of a hole, right? Is it possible I'm missing the bigger picture here?

A plate would be removable, cutting  a slot is permanent so it would depending if you wanted a dedicated 2 way or a permanent one. Also I believe you can rotate Oscars plate so that you could switch from horizontal 2 way to vertical 2 way.

Precisly!  All I wan't on my CP is two joys, one for player1 and one for player2.  I want to be able to take off the restrictor for 4/8 way games.

But curiously enough, they do.  I've had a number of people report excellent results with a Wico leaf stick and the restrictors.
