Title: vynil stickers on chipboard
Post by: f.pelosa on September 24, 2017, 10:00:48 am
Hi all,
will a vinyl stick on a very smooth chipboard?
Or do I need to use a primer pain first?
Thanks!

I would sand and prime and sand again

is it a "I would" or is it a "if you don't, it won't stick"?

It’s a “it will look like ass if you don’t do what Thomas suggested”

We're probably speaking about different materials.
What I'm referring to is extremely smooth. Sanding it in the first place is pointless if not for allowing the primer to stick better.
It is something like this: http://factfile.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Chipboard.jpg (http://factfile.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Chipboard.jpg)

In fact, the reason I'm asking the question is that it is so smooth that I wonder if a vinyl would even stick.

Thanks

I'm not sure what chipboard is, but whether or not vinyl sticks to it will depend on the type of vinyl. Just google the vinyl type located on the backing paper.

Ok, that’s not chipboard the way Surles and I understand it.

As long as the surface is clean on that, if it’s quality vinyl, you should be fine.

ANYHOO,

A clean, dust free surface and good vinyl is the key.

but chipboard and/or OSB...whatever you want to call it... will have an uneven surface that will show through the vinyl that would have to be sanded or filled before applying.

MDF and particleboard typically is smooth enough not to need sanding or filling...results may vary depending on quality of material.

Which is why I agreed with Surles on primering and sanding in the first place.

Sega wiped it off, applied black matte vinyl, and then slapped a sticker on it, Problems came with time, as the wrap on bare wood  started to peel around the edges, and if the edge got dinged Well, starting point for issues, and then people would just start peeling around on it. Primer and sealer, is an option, but this too has its shortcomings, When the cab gets scuffed someday (they all do) you will have a bullseye of colored sealer around the damage (using a cheap waterbased product line) .... Jenn uses a clear sprayed on sealer, covered with sprayed on acrylic, color sanded to remove orangepeel and resprayed for flat, and then the sticker.(possibly burying that too in 9-15 coats of clear, for uv protection, and coverage over the depth of the sticker) depending on what your working on.
