I guess only usefull if you don't do mac address filtering on your wireless router...

Just hoping to make some users of WIFI more carefull.
Just for a test me and a buddy went driving with his laptop and my usb 802.11b antenna. And found too many unprotected networks from private homes. You should not be able to drive down the street and hit refresh on your browser and get a connection.

Yeah, even more scary is not private homes, but businesses. I had net stumbler on and as I drove by a lawyers office his AP was not secure!
-
I live in a townhome, and used to see at least 3 other wifi networks (all open) from certain areas inside my home! (coming from adjacent townhomes)
One of the few joys of living in Silicon Valley I guess.

don't even need to live in Silicon Valley.
I was in my friend's apartment building like 6 months ago, in a small SMALL town called Beacon Falls, CT. I needed to download something but he only had Dialup. So i plugged my wireless card into my laptop on w him and came up with 4!!!! open connections..
that's pretty bad.. :-D
Granted, WEP isn't that secure, but it'll keep wardrivers and casual browsers out, and it takes, what, like 4 seconds to set up?!

I know. It's one thing for homes to not have enough technical savvy to secure their APs, but a business?? That is just inexcusable.

Come on, don't you people have a sense of charity? You should be able to hit reload on your laptop and get a simple web page anytime. Its called being nice to your neighbor.
Now if your network behind the wireless is insecure, then you have problems. And you should always protect yourself so that they can't abuse your wireless. (block outgoing email, and all your local machines).
WIFI security is a joke. If you need security, get a real VPN. Otherwise just help the poor person out who just wants a net connection in his backyard.

What if you live next to a Michael Jackson wannabe? You really want the feds tracing that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- to your IP address? ;D
-
Also your nic needs to be setup too. You can get into someone's network with they are currently attached. The nics can act like wireless crossover cables.

Wow just having moved into a new building and when setting up my DWL-810+ for my xbox I did a site survey and found four open networks mine being the only one with WEP active.
-
Also my router has an antenna boradcast siginal strength setting seeing my xbox is in the same room I put the setting to its lowest and still get good internet games on the xbox.
