Title: Pick n Pay Haul II: This time it's personal.
Post by: Howard_Casto on September 01, 2017, 03:03:11 pm
So the people who put up the signage changed the open time from 9am to 8am sometime after I checked the sign yesterday.... so I got there late and a lot of the good stuff was gone.  I managed to get some interesting scraps though:

Sega Saturn- $20
Vita 2000 - $20
Two recent lcd monitors - $20
Dj hero 2 - $1
Nes Controller  - Free

I might have to return one of the monitors, so in case I do.....  The big thing they have this time are gamepads.... big giant crates of them.  5 bucks a pop.  I saw a bunch of random stuff in there... even a NES power pad thrown in with some dance mats.  Most of the gamepads look pretty beat up, but I'm sure there are some decent ps3/xbox360/wii stuff in there.  Plenty of guitar hero controllers and dj hero controllers as well.  Also would it be worth bothering to get psmove controllers without the camera?  They had a ton of those.

Damn. Good deal on the saturn. Still missing one from my collection.

Don't be too envious.  I'll post a pic later, but it literally looks like somebody made sweet love to it.  I'll get out the heavy gloves to remove sploogey substances tonight.

It was weird......  they had it in the middle of a few stacks of xbox 360 S units.  I wonder if the guy stacking the shelves made a mistake.

Update:

I got the Saturn fairly clean and it seems to work (used an audio cd) but whatever substance was on the thing doesn't seem to want to come off the gamepad.  It's clean, but it's still sticky and gross.  I'll probably have to pick up a new one.  Ps vita works fine.  Damn they have nice, clear, big screens.  I have no clue why Nintendo continues to use such crappy ones in comparison.  The monitors appear to work ok.  One of them is a *shudder* gateway so of course it didn't use a standard power cable and I had to rig something up.  At 10 bucks a pop I might go back later this week and pick up a couple more.  I don't know about you guys, but a person can always use a spare monitor.

I'll post pics later as my phone is charging.

Some other things of note they had that slipped my mind:

Both styles of xbox 360 racing wheel, although the big white one was missing pedals and a power adapter.  Tons of cheap-o racing wheels... none were force-feedback though.  They had a psp in a tin case... anyone know what that is about?  Of course tons of Wiis and 360s.  No ps3s though, which is why I passed on the ps3 move controllers, ect.

If you get rid of that one think of me first. I want it.
Also oval or round buttons?

Sure thing.  :)  It has the round buttons.  I believe this is a model 2 Saturn.  Been looking into the softmod situation.  It looks like you flash a pro action replay??

Btw was the cart slot ever used for anything besides the 4mb expansion?  I'm kind of ignorant about the Saturn.

I had a modded Saturn. One of the few sales I regret.

I have a limited number of games I want to play on it, but they are damn good games.  Panzer Dragoon, Bomberman, ect.

I paid 14.99 day of release for Panzer Dragoon Saga. Got partway through it, disc 3 was warped.

SEGA replaced it free of charge. Complete brand new copy.

Flipped it on eBay for $185 in 2003ish.

10/10 experience.

Went back and got a power pad.  It looked like it had rested at the bottom of the ocean for a few decades, but it cleaned up ok.  Now I need to get some games that actually use the thing.... thought my 150 in 1 had some on there but no dice.

Oh I forgot to mention.  When I was checking the open times for the pick n' pay I went to the goodwill next door.  Got a third generation guitar hero guitar and 4 guitar games for 15 bucks.  That goodwill seems to get in a fair bit of gaming stuff but 90% of the time it's garbage like sports titles.  Need to keep an eye on it.

I made friends with the electronics guy at my goodwill and he lets me know about stuff when it comes in. I got him looking out for a 15 inch crt monitor for me right now. He says they throw those away and dont put them out anymore, which is why im having a hard time finding one for my build. But to the point, he uses ebay as a price reference so any retro games and consoles be marks for top dollar, about a few dollars less than what they sell for, so my goodwill sucks in that department.

I thought about doing that, but realized from other goodwills that they might raise the price.  They are pretty ignorant about that stuff..... found the guitar hero controller in the toys section for 3 bucks, for example.  Mind you that isn't that good of a deal (most shops can't give the big stuff away) but they've put other gaming accessories in the toy section before.

Salvation army store where I work still puts CRT's out.
have not seen a 15" CRT in a while though.
have not seen a 15" LCD either.
I think people just toss them because of their size.

Are you looking for an arcade monitor or a pc monitor?  I've probably got one but the shipping costs might make it impractical.  Last time I got a crt shipped to me it was something crazy like 50 bucks shipping.

Drive to Houston, I've got an arcade crt under my World Cup machine.

Really old video cards have s-video/composite out instead of hdmi out.  The results aren't great, but they are acceptable.

I might go to goodwill and pick up one of the hundred 15" tvs they have for 5 bucks and a vga to composite converter and use it as a placeholder until i find the right monitor.

I've got a VGA -> Composite adapter and the results are pretty good.  You're not reading Anna Karenina in 10 point font so it's not like the resolution is an issue.

Output direct from video cards is fine, too.  These are ---smurfy--- old games with bad graphics.

We've all gone a little nutty with big LCDs and HDMI, but we were also getting good results with CRT TVs 15 years ago....

Thanks. Maybe i can finally get started on this new project. All the parts are here, only hangup was the monitor.

I picked up an extron vsc scan converter off ebay for about $20 shipped and this also turns vga to composite (bnc) or svideo out.
I only tested svideo and it looks great.
i'd see if you can find one of these cheap.

This is what I've used....

https://www.amazon.com/Safstar-Composite-Converter-Adapter-S-video/dp/B01CU6EDQS/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1504793644&sr=8-12&keywords=VGA+Composite (https://www.amazon.com/Safstar-Composite-Converter-Adapter-S-video/dp/B01CU6EDQS/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1504793644&sr=8-12&keywords=VGA+Composite)

Torchlight 2 looked great on my CRT.

Probably just as cheap to get an old video card with SVideo out, though.

Have the same one.
The menu system is nice when it comes to overscan and picture centering.
probably better than an old video card on win 7 since most of those drivers were merged with the OS and no longer have all the nice TV out setting's available.
