Title: How To Secure Monitor Shelf in Cabinet?
Post by: astroboy2001 on January 28, 2004, 02:49:58 pm
 ???

I have an old (dead) Final Fight/Joust Williams cabinet whose existing monitor shelf is too high the TV that I plan to put in.

I wanted to remove the shelf and lower it about 2".  Can someone help me out here with the best way to secure that shelf?  I was thinking maybe using a nail gun and nailing 2 strips of wood to support the shelf?  or maybe use "L Braces"?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I just don't wanna see that TV come crashing down in the cabinet...

Thanks!!!

1"x2" board strips under the shelf and screws will work fine.

Use screws as Sir Poonga says, or use nails AND glue.

I used L-brackets, but it was a huge pain to level. One or another of the stupid things was always a bit off.

I think the 2 strips of wood idea is superior. Less chance to mess up measurements.

Good luck!

I was thinking that would be best, but my BIGGEST FEAR:  the screw punching a hole out to the exterior of cabinet side....now that would just kill me...

That's why you use the correct length screws.

Just measure you thickness of the support and the thickness of the cab and go about 1/8"-1/4" of an inch shorter for the scew length and you should be fine.  And if you are really worried do it on a test piece of mdf.

Excuse me for jumping in here, but my question would be how do you locate the right spot to mount those strips for your TV/monitor/ect shelf. It's not like you can just have someone hold the TV in place while you run around to the front and see if it's the right height or tilted at the right angle. I spose you could try and measure from the floor of the cab up and guesstimate, I just didn't want too move the shelf 16 times.  ???

You would know about where you want the middle of you screen to be, so scribe some lines on the inside of the cabinet sides where the middle of the screen should be.  Then measure on the TV how far down it is from about the middle of the screen to the base.  Then use that dimension to offset the lines you scribed on the inside of the cabinet walls by the same amount.  This should get you very close to where you want your monitor.

I set my monitor on it;s side on a piece of paper.  I angled the base the way it would have been angled and figured out how the monitor was going to sit.  Then measured :)
