Title: FS: .187 Female Quick Disconnects
Post by: SirPeale on January 28, 2004, 12:56:57 pm
Female quick disconnects, blue and red, fully insulated.  I just found a great source on these.  Finally!  Back in stock on .187" and .250" red and blue!

Bag of 100 - $6.00 shipped.

You can order them online, here:

http://www.pealefamily.net/cgi-bin/closedShop/Item.pl?action=ShowCategory&category=parts (http://www.pealefamily.net/cgi-bin/closedShop/Item.pl?action=ShowCategory&category=parts)

I accept Checks, money order and PayPal.  But - no PayPal accounts that are funded with a credit card.  This includes 'debit' cards that have the Visa or MasterCard logo on them.  They still count as a credit card.  I've only got a personal account.

If you're interested, PM or email me.

Edit: had to change the URL, it was letting people into a restricted part of the site!

Ok, quick question.  You mentioned that the red and blue are each for a different type of wire.  Could you touch on what type of wire each are for and what you recommend for each?

Just a side thought. You should look into selling the wire with the connects. It would make it really convenient to order  both in one shot. :)

I'll think about the wire thing.  Problem is I'm having problems finding it in the right types in the right amount.

The difference between the two colors is wire size.  Red is for wire 18-22G, and blue is for wire 14-18G.  A lot of people use the blues for grounds, and red for data.  Some just use one color (be it red or blue)

I know this is extremely basic to some , but i a, trying to understand this lol.  Does the smaller the gage amount mean the smaller diameter of the wire?  Now, does that have anything to do with how stiff the wire is?   Also,  does it really matter much rather you use 14 or 18 gage wire for the positive leads?    I just see alot of people using different stuff, but what is "the norm"?   It doesn't seem like it would matter much as its not sending alot fo current through the wire.

Just questions i have been wondering about for a while now.

Actually, the bigger the gauge, the smaller the wire.  Not sure why that is, but it is.

Stiffness can be cause by if the wire is multistranded or solid.  Also by what kind of material the wire is made of (copper or whatever).

What's the 'norm?'  Looks like most people use 22G.  Some use 18.  Some people even use 24, and some use the stuff from CAT-5 cable.

did you have enough left of the red to fullfill the order i placed tonight?

If not , then the blue would be fine.

Here is a really dumb question, yea you know you wanted to ask it but didn't have the guts.

Regarding the ".187" in ".187 Female Disconnects,"  what exactly does that number or fraction denote?  Also what unit is that?  I was poking around at home depot looking at the female disconnects and didn't see that fraction on any of them though I saw connectors that appeared to be the ones I should use.

Thus endeth my noob question of the day.
Title: Re:FS: .187 Female Quick Disconnects
Post by: GroovyTuesdaY on February 11, 2004, 03:00:19 am
If i'm not mistaken, the .187 (or one hundred eight seven thousandths)
is the size of the clip in width for the female connector part that fits over the male pin on the microswitch.
Lowes only carried .250 size which is a little bigger , so i was screwed on that one.  It seems that .187"  isn't a real popular size at most do it yourself shops. Must not be a common size for electricians to use or something.
Thats why i just went ahead and ordered from peale. He's cheap, gives a good quantity, and hopefully hes fast with shipping lol.

Hope this helps :)

You can get them at Radio Shack, but they don't typically sell them in large quantities. They also package them with the male connectors so you end up with a bunch of crap you don't want. And it's far more expensive.

Yea, i found that out the hard way recently. I had them in my hand and right when the guy was ringing them up, i noticed through the bag, that their were males in there.  I told the guy " WHOA. Hold up, i'm not paying 1.70 for a bag of 16 connectors and only half of them are what i want."
best place i found is PEALE here for prices. At least so far as i have found lol.

How's Fort Wayne doin'? Ever since they got rid of Aladdin at Southown Mall and Tilt at Glenbrook I hated living there.  :P Well, not really, but life wasn't as fun. Maybe it was just me but those two were kickass arcades.

Yea, your right, those WERE kick ass arcades!  I remember going to the alladins castle arcade back when southtown mall was really roaring, now the whole mall sits empty and vacant.  SAD indeed.  Glenbrook mal l had two arcades at one time. One above  and second down below by the ice rink, but even those are now gone. I imagine glenbrook wanted to much rent  and since the arcades don't seem to make as much nowadays, the had to cloesem.
About the only place left in fort wayne now to play mass arcade games is at PUTT PUTT North.  If there is anywhere else, i've never heard of it, but putt putt is still pretty cool.   Its just not a big enough place really. The town where i live, Bluffton,in there aint squat! The bowling alley used to have about 15 games and a couple pinball machines, but now even it has abandoned us arcaders, it just sucks. I walked into a really BIG arcade while traveling in michigan last summer and it housed at least 50 games in there not to mention all the stuffed animal machines and skeeballs and the like.  I was in total AWE!  The arcade was busy at the time too and man oh man, it was definatly a moving moment for me.  Can't explain it, it just felt like......well, like home lol. Might sound dumb, but its how i felt.

Sorry for the thread hijack lol.

I haven't tried the quick diso's I got from you yet on microswitch buttons or any type of joys, but I have tried them on leaf switch buttons and had to crimp every single one just so gravity wouldn't take it off.

Is there a reason why it is like this?  Will it be the same with things other than the leafies?

Interesting!  First problem I've heard of them yet.  I've tried them on microswitches without issue.

I would be interested in getting fifty red and fifty blues, as well as 2 of those 7/8 barrel locks.  Would that be alright?  What would the total cost be?  How long would it take (I think that the locks have to be ordered, right?)?

Peale sorry for my noobieness...

1)  I just bought a bunch of buttons from Happs with the cherry switches & some Super Joy's.  Will these fit those switches & Joys?

2)  I already purchased 18 gauge wire.  Will 2 18 Gauge wires fit into one of those disconnects?  I plan on daisy chaining my ground wires.

3)  Do you ship to Canada?

Thanks for your time.

Measure the terminal on the switch with a ruler.  If it's 1/4", then no.

It should if you get the blues.  Red definitely won't work, it's too small.

I'm not sure.  It's likely on their site, either .250" or .187" (and I sell both)

Oh, and for that gauge of wire, you need red.

Well I received my quick disconnects along with my wire right on time.  Peale shipped everything VERY quickly and was extremely friendly.

The disconnects are high quality (not like radioshack junk) and the wiring came all taped up and secured.

If you need any disconnects, wire, or anything else he sells for that matter, I would HIGHLY recommend him.

It's odd that the box doesn't say.  It might on the back.

I'm guessing that everyone is fine with their disconnects, as I have received *no* responses from people wanting them.  I did get a couple orders, though, for my remaining QDs.

Color *does* matter.  The QDs are color coded by what size wire you're using.

As for how long, it depends on their stock.  Might be here by Friday, more likely Monday.

I don't have any, but either a board member might have some, or you could likely just order them.

Here's the kicker: it would likely be cheaper to order a whole button assembly and get the switch that way than just get the switch by itself!

Really?  Cheapest I've seen is Bob Roberts at $.90 a switch, where as buttons with switches seem to be around $1.50.  The shipping is what is killing me from Bob's place, it's like $4 no matter how small the order.  I always seem to order things then then realize later that I need more stuff.  Dang!

Ok, I ordered like 6 packs off of your site!  Can't wait to get them.
Thanks a ton.  Hope to order more from you in the future.

 :)

Hey peale I just realized I've been using 26 gauge wire and not 22.  Will the red disconects still work for me or is there another color I should be getting.  If there is a better color could you order it for me and switch out my order?  Thanks

Daaaaamn, son!  What are you building?  That's 600 QDs!

The reds are the smallest they make.  26G is pretty small, so you may want to bend it over itself to double it up.  I'm guessing you're using CAT5 or similar?
Title: Re:FS: .187 Female Quick Disconnects
Post by: spiffyshoes on October 04, 2004, 04:21:50 pm
No I don't use cat5.  I just use regular old tinned copper 26g wire (http://shop1.outpost.com/search?search_type=regular&sqxts=1&query_string=CTI+SO26&cat=&submit.x=10&submit.y=11).  I buy it from Fry's Electronics.

As for what I'm building, I build playstation arcadepads.  Each pad would use 30 quickconnects and as of now I tend to build about 4-5 joysticks a week.

Here's my website.

Actually they Red are not the samallest QDs, (there are tiny yellow ones) but the smaller ones are very hard to find. And I don't imagine it would me much fun crimping them either as you probably require a special tool for ones that small.

Do you still have my backorder?

The color denotes wire gauge.  Yellow is for *really* big wire, like 10G or so.  Unless there is something that is breaking the color standard, of course...

24-26 AWG .250 and .187 fully insulated QDs and they are yellow. They must have run out of imagination when they were selecting colours.

I will send you an e-mail tomorrow with the backorder information...getting late.

I'd noted a serious slack in sales on the disconnects.  And thanks to Buddabing, now I know why...

Guess the shopping cart software has a few more kinks that need to be worked out.  When someone shops there, and puts an item in their cart, the inventory drops by that amount.  Good if they check out...bad if they don't.  I just checked, and the site was reading 'out of stock' on all the disconnects!  I've got stock here, so I checked the database.  It was reading in the negative numbers!

Anyway...to sum up, I've got them in stock, and will *definitely* reorder if there is sufficient demand.

Speaking of demand, I've had a couple requests for .250" QDs.  Anyone else want some?

Hey Peale, a few quick questions before I place a order.
Please don't shoot the newbie until he finishes and starts running.

I know...
- .187" & .250" is the size of the disconnect.
  (HAPPS pushbutton microswitch is .187)
doesn't say on joystick but guess its the same.

- the color is the size gauge of the wires used.
- lower number gauge is 'thicker' than higher number.

Now the question...
Is the wire gauge a personal preference or some technical reason
we should use a particular gauge for certain connections like
ground, +5 and such.  Seems like most people uses 20-22 gauge.

Thanks for any reply.

It depends on what you're using it for.  If you're using it for electrical connections, you'd want a heavier gauge wire (16G or so).  For data connections, smaller wire will do fine (20g-22g)

I do have blue, but not red.

Keep it coming, guys.  I'd like about a 800 piece 'pre-order' and so far I've got  about 500.  More would be better.

It's funny...sometimes I'll sell completely out of QDs in less than a week, and other times I won't sell any for a couple months.  Need for QDs comes and goes, I guess.

*sigh* that happens when people 'fake shop' - ie they put the items in their shopping cart, but then don't check out.  It's a bug in the shopping cart software.  I'll take care of it in a bit.

Depends on how many people need QDs, and how quickly.  Fast moving inventory is always a good thing, and usually when I restock I can count on one thing: three or four initial orders, then hanging on to inventory for another couple months, while it trickles out in sporadic orders.  Likely it's a combination of the web interface I use and people leery of sending money to 'some guy.'

I can actually probably do the wiring kit straight away, just need to look and see what I've got left.

I usually buy 1,000 at a time.  So I'll get enough people looking for say...800 of them.  I order, then only sell 200 immediately instead of the 800 of the people who 'said' they wanted them.  Then I sit on the stock, watching it collect dust, and sell 100 a month until they're gone.

It's because of this: people go to order, put the item in their shopping cart, then never check out.  It takes the inventory from the database, and if there's no inventory, no one orders.  I'm working on a new site with new software to help with that problem.  In the interim I'm thinking of just doing away with the system, and dealing with PM only.  Kinda sucks though, as the site gives names, addresses and instant PayPal interaction.
Title: Re: FS: .187 Female Quick Disconnects

Peale, do you have any web-designer experience?  If not, I could probably adjust your system for you, or write a new one to do this right, because let's face it, not everyone is ready to purchase when they put stuff in their cart.  For me, I copy and paste the order into Word to remember the price, and usually you can only get the shipping price once you're in the shopping cart.  Give me a PM and I may be able to work with you if you can't do it alone.

It's a series of Perl scripts called closedShop.  It works well enough.  I was using 1.9, they just came out with 2.0 which is supposed to fix a lot of bugs.  I tried upgrading, but it didn't like it.  I'm working on the other site right now, which works fine (inventory and whatnot) I've just been lazy.

So just to be totally clear for a noob (me), if I'm using 22 gauge wire through-out, for a 4 player cab (4 to 5 joysticks, 2 of which are rotaries, and 33 buttons total) will 100 disconnects do?

Also, am I correct that the red and blue .187 disconnects are identical, except for color?

Now in stock!

Are you going to offer the 50/50 pack for $6.50 again, or is it just 100 red or 100 blue?

Thanks

I'm out?  Crud.  I'll have to set that right in the AM.

Ahhh, I finally get it after reading his detailed product descriptions. I kept thinking that since they were both .187 that they were identical. Sorry.

Order placed, and PM sent. :)

Still have a couple bags of red .187".  Also have thirteen bags of blue .187", so don't be shy about ordering them!  They work really good for ground loops, since they allow a larger wire (or wires) within them.

Ordered 6 bags of .187 QD's. Come on people let's keep the man in business! .187's are hard to find in stores!

*clears cobwebs off of thread as he walks through*

Everyone order a bag, even if you don't need any just order a bag for shits and giggles.
Thanks Peale!
This thread should be stickied btw...

PM Peale. There might still be a glitch in the store where if you add to cart and then don't buy it still subtracts from the inventory. Just check with him.  I just bought 6 bags from him so I may have put him out of stock.

Peale: Stock up man... There'sa people wantin em.
Also suggest carrying .110 tab FQD's because they are the right size for sanwa buttons.

Humorous.  Just had my workplace buy me some from a vendor of ours.  200 of 'em.  (I don't have to pay a thing!  I have an awesome boss!)
