Title: War for the Planet of The Apes
Post by: DaOld Man on July 14, 2017, 09:44:29 pm
Just watched it today. I liked it, quite possibly the best in this new series.
I think the next one will be a remake of the original POTA (with Charlton Heston).
There are two characters who (names at least) are on the original POTA.
But it doesnt tie in with the ship carrying Taylor (Heston) traveling a thousand years into the future.
Based on these two characters ages, maybe 20 or so years.

Remakes, remakes why no funding for original stories?  There are thousand books in the library that would make a good movie.

Full agreement with Ark on this one.  Seriously, if you want a re-make...  do Starship Troopers.  Not like the original had anything to do with the book.  A remake would probably be way more accurate.  Maybe.  Hopefully...  ah, who am I kidding?

If you actually watch these films, they have absolutely positively nothing to do with the original POTA movies except for the title.  The first one is a rather charming story about an adult son trying to save his father from alheizmer's disease and really just uses the apes as an excuse to tell the tale.  It's fantastic.  Now I'll gladly admit that each subsequent sequel is worse and they really need to stop now before they make the mistake Tim Burton did and walk on sacred ground, but they are undoubtedly their own story and are well worth a watch.

And that's from a person who fundamentally hates remakes and reboots.

As I recall the original movie had little in common with the book so they are free to do whatever they want with this franchise IMHO.

I agree.  The first one would have been a fantastic movie even as a stand-alone.

Yeah I want to see Sargent Zim with his fangs!  I know I am contradicting myself here, but I would like to see a three part movie of Battlefield Earth with Christopher Nolan or Peter Jackson directing. John Travolta's outing was ...unforgivable.

You want to see a movie where the author inserts himself into the story as a wise professor and defends fascism for 300 pages?  Pass.

Agreed.   Starship Troopers isn't supposed to be taken ironically......  Heinlein believes all of that might makes right, civil rights can be ditched for victory, and all enemies in war are automatically monsters b.s. that is laced throughout the film.

It's surprising how many people didn't notice at the time that Paul Verhoeven's film was meant to be satirical, I mean it wasn't exactly subtle.

Yeah, I've never been fully convinced on that satirical explanation.

Agreed.  The Nazi-esque uniforms pushed it firmly in the satire category for me.

Watched it last night.  It went on for friggin forever.  Shame Caesar died at the end after that waste of time with the captured apes, and all that death at the end only for the apes to settle in Tahoe.   Liked the other taking bad ape, but the whole thing was very depressing.  Humans dumbing down and pointless violence towards people with disabilities.  It sent all the wrong messages.

It should get the Oscar.

Dragged on too long but we liked it.  Arks post was a dick move, but par for his course.

Actual monkeys would have hopped right out of those pens without breaking a sweat.

Surprisingly violent.  Felt like there were a lot of unreliable sources in the movie, so who knows what was really happening...

Did you not see my spoiler warning on my title?  Besides wikipedia does a better job, and I thought everyone had seen it.  I have the goods on the new Valerian movie if anyone is interested...

Usually I think people overreact to Ark's trolling but he has hit a new low here.  Dick move indeed.

This gives me a great idea.  I should do movie reviews.

Now I've seen it, totally agree. Feels like the next one will be a remake of the first Charlton Heston. But instead of a thousand years into the future, it's just one generation basically. None the less I really enjoyed it.
