Trying to run this on a windows 10 machine from a bootable USB drive. I keep getting this error when trying to run atiflash. I've set it to run as administrator, and tried adjusting the compatibility setting without success. Any ideas?
-
Sounds like you are trying to run the windows version of the program from outside of windows - find a dos version of ATIflash rather than the windows version.
-
Well I downloaded it from this website, as linked by the ATOM-15 installation guide:
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/ (https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/)
The download contains both ATIFlash & ATIWinflash. I only put ATIFlash on the usb drive. I created the drive using Rufus and it boots into DOS just fine. It just wont run ATIFlash.

Maybe try an older version of ATIFlash?...
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/bios-flashing/ (https://www.techpowerup.com/download/bios-flashing/)
Under AMD/ATI ATIFlash
Click on "30 previous versions"
Then on the next page, click on "Show more versions" on the left side.
The numbering is strange. The "latest" two versions are 2.74 and 2.71 which doesn't make sense because the version before that appears to be 4.17.
I'd try 4.17 to see if you get the same error. If not, start working backwards from there.

Tried all of them and get the same error.

Tried all of them and get the same error.
You get the same "This program cannot be run in DOS mode" error even on older versions like 3.86 and 4.17?
If so, then I'm stumped. Why even have separate DOS and Windows versions if they don't work in DOS?
Is there something wrong with your USB boot drive? Maybe wrong kind of DOS? FAT vs FAT32? I'm grasping at straws here.
-
Agreed it's very strange. I've googled the error and can't find anything useful. I boot into DOS fine. I'm on my c drive and all DOS commands work as normal. I can see the exe, but then get the error whenever trying to run it. I'm about ready to try ATIWinflash but I know it's more risky.

Try the version linked here (4.07)...

I'll try that later this evening and report back. Thanks for the tip.

That one works, thanks!!
Now when I run it, it says "adapter not found".
Any idea how to fix that?
-
What kind of card do you have?
I guess it might be possible that your card is too new for that version to recognize.
Are you sure that version 4.11 and 4.17 (see attached) don't work either?
-
It's a Gigabyte GV-R938G1 GAMING-4GD.
I'll give those a try but I wont be able to do this until this evening. Will report back.
Thanks for your help with this!

That's a fairly recent (and expensive) card. The R9 380 was launched in June 2015. That may be why you're having trouble with the "adapter not found" messages.
You might be forced to use the AMD/ATI ATIFlash 2.74 version in windows as it came out after the R9 380.
Does your card have the dual BIOS feature with the switch described here?...

I checked the Gigabyte website and they actually have 2 tools to flash the bios for this card. I'm thinking that one of these is probably better to use than old versions of ATIFlash. It looks like I can set the machine to use the on-board graphics in the bios if I brick it. I'll need to look for that switch tonight too. There's also an option in the bios to disable the logo when booting, so I don't know if I even need to use ATOM-15?
I'm hooking this up to a Billabs BL25C90T.

OK, here are my results:
1) Tried both Gigabyte bios update programs. Easy Boost doesn't run on 64-bit systems. VGA@BIOS backed up my bios. Then I patched it with ATOM-15 successfully. Tried to reflash and VGA@BIOS told me that it couldn't flash the mod because it was the same bios. So that didn't work.
2) Ran ATIWinflash and backed up my bios. Ran ATOM-15 and successfully patched it. Reflashed with ATIWinflash. Card bricked
3) Mounted card in a 2nd pc with 2 slots and reflashed original bios with ATIWinflash. Card fixed.
It looks like I can't flash this card.
The bios does have an option to disable the full screen logo, so I did this and I see the attached 2 screens during boot.
Are these modes above the 31KHz range? In other words, is ATOM-15 even needed in this situation? Yes, if I want to get into the bios, I need hook up my LCD and disconnect the CRT. Then the bios will display normally so I can make any adjustments.
-
Are you sure the card got bricked? I mean, it might look bricked due to lack of video but the pc actually boot.
Anyway, please post your BIOS so I can check.
-
I've attached the original bios, modded bios, and both logs. I needed to change the bios extensions from ".rom" to "jpg" in order to attach them. This site doesn't allow me to attach ".rom" files. See the attached error message that I get when trying to do that.
Thanks

When I flashed the modded bios, I only had a black screen. I assumed this meant it was bricked.
-
Now I'm thinking that the reason I'm only getting a black screen is because I didn't set my desktop resolution to one of the allowed modded resolutions? In other words, I should have set it to either 640 X 480 60Hz (31KHz mode) or 1024 X 768 30Hz (25 KHz mode)?
Edit: this doesn't make sense because ATOM-15 only controls the video card before windows boots. After booting I should have seen the normal desktop.
When I look at advanced adapter properties, and click on show all modes, they all show true color 32-bit. Is this also a problem? Can I even drive a 15/25/31 multi-sync with this card when it can only output 32-bit color?
