Title: Jurassic Park 3 (MAME)
Post by: dgrace on June 20, 2017, 03:12:05 pm
Have they figured out yet how to get Jurassic Park 3 arcade game to work on MAME? That would be a sweet game to add to my light gun game collection but I don't think it's working yet?

Not sure, but they are working on it.

WIP:

- 0.186: Gun triggers for Jurassic Park 3. Added 2nd Player and 1x button.

- 0.171: ShouTime added clone Jurassic Park 3 (ver UA).

- 0.132u5: Guru and Angelo Salese redumped Compact Flash and NVRAM for all Konami Viper games and updated drivers. Changed description to 'Jurassic Park 3 (ver EBC)'.

- 0.114u1: Ville Linde added 'Jurassic Park 3' (Konami 2001).
This game requires the ROM "jpark3", the BIOS "kviper", and a CHD file "b41c02" -- try it out and let us know.

It looks like version 186 already comes with the CHD and Bios file mentioned above.  I'll keep fiddling with it.

Couldn't get it to load.  Just get a black screen.  I'm probably doing something wrong.  Someone else want to take a stab at it?  Thanks

There's a big red screen telling you it doesn't work if you attempt to launch it from the commandline

and a big red box in the internal UI telling you that it doesn't work before you even launch it

I'll leave you to figure out the meaning of those big red message for yourself, but they were put there to help you in situations like this.

Thanks Dr. Obvious.  Since the MAME 0.187 Git change log mentions improvements to jpark3 I thought maybe the problem was that I was simply putting the required bios or chd file in the wrong folder and that's why I was getting the chd error message.

"Dr. Obvious" happens to be part of the  MAME dev team.   IIRC >:D

We understand your frustration dgrace, but there's plenty of info on the web on CHD's and where to put them to get the game going.  Here's one:  http://www.mameworld.info/easyemu/mameguide/mameguide-roms.html (http://www.mameworld.info/easyemu/mameguide/mameguide-roms.html)

Have you tried a CHD that you KNOW works?  Such as Area 51?

I apologize for my snarkiness.  It was unnecessary.  I know you guys are just trying to help.  I'll check that out. Thank you

Well if there had been enough improvements to the emulation to warrant removing the NOT WORKING flag, then it would have been listed under the 'new working machines' section.

The flag indicates zero confidence is the driver running properly and is used for machines that don't do anything, are liable to crash at random, or have serious game breaking glitches due to incomplete emulation.  For non-arcade drivers they can also indicate a low compatibility rate for the software that is available for a given system (ie, again, a flag of no confidence in the correctness of the emulation)

If there had been noteworthy progress on the driver more people would be making a big deal out of it and the flag would be gone ;-)

If memory recalls the real Haze had his annual meltdown last year and departed the Mame shores to a new and uncertain future.  Something to do with direction and where the project was going. It was a huge tirade on his website (https://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2016/05/08/winding-down/) which is/was/were a bugbear with him.  Personally I think he is the only asset in the project keeping it together.  :blah:  We all wished him well and it was a very sad day for the whole community.  :'(

I do believe there is a doppelganger that does all the work now on his site.  Maybe that is the persona you are referring to and who posts here?

I couldn't get it to load. Maybe i'll have better luck with 0.187 since the git info mentions improvements for that release regarding jpark3.  Fingers crossed. Thanks for your help.

Why are you bothering with it?  The emulation is incomplete and it simply does not work.

I just watched a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoiHLn60Uhw) of it.  Looks like a cross between Dino Crisis and Virtual cop on the PSX.  Isn't this game still in the arcades? Why is the mame team ripping a recent game?  I thought there was an agreement not to rip games that are still making money.  Saying that, when are they going to dump Voyager?  :lol

The OP wants to play the game, heck, that is what mame is for, and it is a nice side effect to have the game captured for preservation.   ::)

The team should release a hack for it as it looks really :puke and we want to he wants want to play it now.

trolling as you are...

the game is from 2001, it's 16 years old.

when MAME was conceived / released in 1996/7, Pacman was also roughly 16 years old.  nobody considered it a recent game.

of course, hardware improved rapidly back then, so emulating Jurassic Park 3 is a LOT more challenging than emulating Pacman, but that's not really the point.
