Captain America and the Button Mashers. Not my cup of tea. I'll pass this one.

So this one sent me down a rabbit hole last night.  "Hmm... I think I have that loaded on that MAME cabinet in the office I never play...."

First the motherboard battery was dead.  The cabinet is so tight that basically everything had to get disconnected and come out.

Put it back together, boot it up, and GUESS WHAT?! Time to go find a keyboard and hit F1.  At least that was easier.

Then I had to figure out what the hell was making the on screen display menu pop up constantly.  Turned out I had mapped it to Right + P1 Button 1 to mess with one game months ago and forgot to unmap it.  Guess what combination you pound constantly in this game.

So, what, 60-70 minutes later I finally get to play.  Then I'm tired and go to sleep instead.

Soooo, are the attached settings considered "normal"?

Difficulty: Normal
Lives: 3

That's what .115u2 shows I used, but it's not always in sync w/ the newer revs.

I didn't seem to get 3 lives. Power starts at 100, gets knocked down bit by bit, dead. Where does the 3 lives thing enter in...

Having said that, Cap was my best run out of trying all 4. 66,900. Vision didn't get a fair chance: first player & far left on the awkward diagonal controls. I learned a bit from Vision to give Iron Man a better run...and he seems to punch way harder too. Cap had a good run. Hawkeye suffered by my fatigue, my waning interest after having played 3 games, &he's got the other outboard funny-angle joystick.

Cap is the man for me.

Nobody in the history of ever actually played as Vision or Hawkeye in the arcade.

I thought I had a relevant pic. It turns out my kids were playing Spiderman on my mostly finished cab. They loved the Avengers game too. This was 2003 I believe. My daughter is now 19, and my son is 15. Time flies.

That's Awesome! As a child this was my favorite game on the genesis.

Again, what settings are being used?

The original post needs to specify.

Default settings sometimes change between revs of MAME, so scores aren't really valid if we don't know the DIP switch settings.

Thanks,
Jason

Does this help?
He's asking about the specific settings.

Based on the screenshot he posted earlier, his settings were:
Quote
Lives = 3
Difficulty = normal
Playmode = 4 players

It would also be good to confirm which of the possible versions of the ROM players should use.
Quote
ROMname = "captaven" (Asia, rev 1.4)
or
Quote
ROMname = "captavenu" (US, rev 1.9)
These two seem like the most likely candidates.

Scott
EDIT: Fixed ROMname "captavenu".   :embarassed:

Oh it HAS to be the US version. Otherwise you don't hear: "America still needs your help!"

That line still takes me back to the Walmart entryway, in Collinsville, IL, Begging mom for one more quarter.

Here's a starter:
42,400

(I changed my dip switch to 4-player, it didn't change. Maybe needed to be reset.)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170626/6ded4e38e6c2c1866b9951390108cf6e.jpg)

I think it's obvious to say it's the US version. I believe 4-player setting will be fine.

Progress.

And what of the # of lives? It can be set to 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Per a previous post of mine, it was set to 3, but I get only 1 life with 100 power units.

I tried setting it to 1 life, rebooted. Still just 1 life w/ 100 units.

Set to 4 lives, rebooted. Still just 1 life w/ 100 units.

So, this DIP switch setting does nothing.

What of you guys, getting 3 lives or 1 on your machines?

For future reference, these details should be researched & included in the *first* post, rather than halfway through a competition.

93,401 w/ Cap, US ROM, only 1 life though set for 3, normal difficulty.

Thank you,
-Jason

I was able to play for about 20 mins. Got like ~40k with the default dip switches on the Asia rom.

I messed with the dip switches & it seems 2 players/4 players just allows you to switch players in 2 player mode vs having to play with specific player controls in 4 player mode. The lives dip switch didn't do anything - always get one life with 100 health no matter the setting.

This game is a lot harder than I remember. Only getting around 10-40k the problem I'm having is the cocktail is setup for 4-players but the first person seat only plays as vision.

This game is a lot harder than I remember.

I remember it being a borderline dud in the arcades, too.  Play this and then go play X-men, no comparison.

I actually prefer this.

The X-men game just feels like generic Konami quarter feeder trash, it doesn't come close to their other efforts (Simpsons, Turtles etc.)

The pint-sized characters mean the screen never really feels crowded on this, plus the 60fps animation / video update makes it a lot more responsive and playable.  I also prefer the art direction here, backgrounds have a painted style to them etc.  I guess this is more like a NES game on steroids or something, and has similar appeal.

So yeah, that's the result of my comparison at least.

So, this DIP switch setting does nothing.

Perhaps it is connected to the allow continue switch (ie. only allows so many continues  :dunno )
